After years of money printing many are worried about holding too much cash. Fiat currency can simply be inflated away and lose purchasing power.

BP may not wish to hold too much cash, thinking their money can be better invested in an area they know. It makes sense to put money into partnering with,or acquiring , promising companies and new technology.

Interesting post McMuff. Certainly CC and the scientific team seem to show a quiet confidence in what they are doing, judging by recent videos/Spotlight series.

Touk, sorry to be slow responding but have been out most of the day.

I believe investors in the stock market expect a return on the money invested. That return may be in the form of dividends, or capital appreciation or a combination of both.

Amazon, I believe, doesn’t pay a dividend, yet it has some large investors such as BlackRock on board. Are they gamblers? Even a dividend paying company can suspend the dividend or reduce it. Look at the yield on many good companies- often less than you could get in a relatively safe building society.

Some companies prefer reinvesting profits to grow, rather than dish out dividends.

I never expected to get a dividend with Avacta but I hope to achieve a decent capital gain. I understand that will take time. I understand there is risk. When I do eventually sell I will make a gain or a loss. If I sell now I will make a loss.

Gambling, to me anyway, is a bet on something over a very short time period where the outcome is quick, eg the lottery or a horse race. The result is either a win or a total loss.

I think most people invested here hope for a decent return but there are clearly a number of shareholders here who have experienced cancer themselves ( or through a family member) and they wish to invest ethically in a company tying very hard to make a difference.

Whether you see yourself as an investor or a gambler I wish you good luck.

Touk. Those of us who bought shares in the placings ( 2 from memory) invested directly into Avacta. So we supported the company, adding to their funds. By your own definition we are therefore investors and not gamblers.

Even buying shares in the open market supports the share price and also therefore supports the company.

You are therefore incorrect to say “what we are doing here is GAMBLING”.

If you must always look for the negatives, then carry on. Your choice.

BV. And I remember when the British motorcycle industry laughed at Honda when the “nifty thrifty Honda 50” was introduced, back in the sixties.

As somebody once said - they’re not laughing now!

Sadly honesty and integrity is hard to find on AIM.

You would hope people seek reward after achieving something - not before.

Talking of drips ………

I’ve been re- watching the 8 November 24 Spotlight presentation.

Avacta has a design led test cycle. Constantly learning and evolving. With ADC’s there is complexity in achieving the bystander effect and there are “ off target toxicities”- we have a much simpler process. They can tweak things, if needed, to extend half life. Exciting stuff.

So much has been invested in ADC’s yet we appear to have something much simpler and better. It all has to be proved up, of course but it all looks pretty groundbreaking to me.

You did predict the 11’s yesterday. Last November you said it would be 2p in 3 months ie now. Any guesses as to what day it will be tomorrow?

I don’t think I have ever been invested in a share where there were so many obsessed with guessing daily price movements. It is ridiculous. It is only relevant if you have very short term investment horizons.

Each to their own, of course. My suggestion is that if you feel gold is in a bull market and if you feel you have invested in a company with vast land holdings in good locations, then you have pretty good odds of success. Obviously there is risk, as there is with everything.

I intend to sit on my hands and see how this all plays out. It is very important to make your own judgements and not trust speculation of bulletin board posters, some of whom are clearly not invested.

I believe this company is in the right place at the right time.

I agree. The NHS is not alone, in having to make difficult decisions about the cost of drugs. Constantly having to weigh up cost v benefit. Deciding which areas to fund. There will never be enough money to do all the treatments which may be possible.

I have absolutely no idea what the company is worth. The true value of Avacta is constantly changing, as the science progresses. In the event of a takeover that value will be determined by others.

I am more interested in the direction of travel. Are the trials and the science making progress , have we got good leadership, are the team working as a team and have they got clear objectives? I believe the answer is yes.

I have just watched, once again, Spotlight episode 7 in which Michelle Morrow, CSO, is interviewed. She very clearly explains what attracted her to Avacta - the emerging data, the masking of a cytotoxic drug so it is inactive until it reaches the tumour, 100 fold dox in the tumour compared to the blood, the differentiated way our platform delivers drugs, versatility, what we can do in terms of different warheads, tuning that, how to tailor the drug so it treats different levels of FAP, how the pre|CISION peptide is a “micropeptide” which is so small it is invisible to the immune system. FAP actually driving the mechanism of the drug.

Well worth re-watching. So I’m still happy with where we appear to be going.

I believe Pascal Soriot is somebody who can make bold decisions, if he sees an opportunity.

Miller. A very approximate calculation shows that over the last 5 years silver has gone up 2 dollars every 6 months. Over the last year it is approx 4 dollars every 6 months.

But you said yesterday the share price would be in the 5’s today. In November you told us 2p this February. You still think you can predict the future?!

Wyn. I feel your comments about our Covid test are perfectly valid. Certainly I didn’t know the test contained an antibody.

However the main aim for Avacta has always been about improved treatment for those suffering from cancer. Better outcomes, minimal side effects. Alastair, unfortunately, was distracted by the “Covid opportunity” if it can be called that. He also went “off piste” with Diagnostics purchases in my view.

In the end, those decisions, coupled with the horrific placing , brought about his downfall.

We now have a change in CEO, who has rebuilt the team and brought about a very clear focus within the company. Christina really is a breath of fresh air, she knows exactly where she wants to go, she is a clear communicator, she knows how to get the best from people. The Spotlight series has introduced us to key members of staff, scientists we haven’t heard much about previously, we have heard at first hand what they do and how their work and knowledge is evolving. All these people are now working together as a team.

Sadly, Alastair was responsible for reputational damage to the company in my view. Much has now changed and for the better. However it takes time to rebuild credibility.
