Petrol for a Hillman Minx. That’s the old Coventry Climax 1750cc engine , if I’m not mistaken. Probably with a Zenith carburetor. I had one of them on my forecourt back in 1967, if I recall correctly. Now you need to be careful what petrol you use. Now that we have unleaded petrol and some that is mixed with ethanol your trusty vehicle may not be running at its best. I recommend a couple of shots of Redex to secure peak performance.

Price? Now there’s a more difficult question. I expect that Reeves from Redex procurement and Krypton tuning will need to raise tax on petrol, among other things, by between half a crown and ten bob for petrol sold in one of those small (1/3rd) pint measures to pay for’ the dole’, or whatever that is now called.

Also political tensions (=war) near our ‘‘ government’s’ preferred CO2 obfuscation sources of supply could also lead to a sudden and dramatic increase in the price of the commodity .(Note North Sea currently conflict free (apart from a proxy Guerre de Cabillaud. The problem with your argument is that oil is a fungible product. North Sea oil may be extracted from the eponymous basin but it is and can be sold and landed anywhere. The advantages of Buchan oil are that it can be taxed by the government of the day, it provides employment, can help with the balance of payments (if exported) , can be produced with a lower carbon intensity and have lower CO2 emissions related to its transportation to UK shores. These points will all have been made by companies and unions and one might imagine some sensible people in the Treasury. There is hope.

In addition, Buchan is not New Oil.

Undoubtedly Britain will need oil and gas for decades to come.

The oil is there , proven (and there is potential upside). In times of economic turbulence perhaps investors are seeking refuge in an asset-backed stock?

The Buchan oil will be produced sooner or later, governments come and go, political fads, such as Net Zero, come and go.

The discount to the ‘real’ value - as evinced by brokers and commenters here on this board ( thank you Dick!) reflects the timing uncertainty.

I’m hanging on to both of my shares and looking forward to the All Day Breakfast Banquet at The Happy Eater in Buckfastleigh sooner rather than later.

Well it looks to me that the traders who bought in at the end of Feb on the back of the fall in price resulting from the exit of a large holder have now sold out for an up to 10% gain. Good for them. This might mean that we are back to longer-term investors.

Expect the current price to be a floor for a while with potential for slow uptick pending the release of positive news.

The outcome of the Government ‘consultation’ process can be more or less predicted; they want a set of bureaucratic reasons from the Sir Humphreys to justify an already made set of decisions for production from the North Sea to be reinvigorated. If it was “No Go” they would not have initiated the consultation process . QED.
