Z has acknowledged that it is not a realistic expectation that Ukraine can retake lost territories, he has stated it would cost far to many lives. He prefers to go the legal route, but that to me would prove extremely problematic, but is perhaps the best of two very bad options.

In my opinion this is now the very situation that many experts at the outset stated would lead to a peace agreement, and that is when the conflict is at a stalemate.

Yes I appreciate both sides have little gains/wins here and there, but these are pretty meaningless in the scheme of the conflict.

My understanding is Ukraine would accept peace based on the current territorial lines.

Russia is prepared to hand back some territories in exchange for the remaining Donbass territory occupied by Ukraine.

Resolve this issue and agree security guarantees then there is a basis of a meeting at the leadership level.

The situation has been a stalemate for some time and with the level of deaths and economic situation surely it is in the interest of both countries to reach a peace agreement.

Z has stated that it will not be feasible to retake the land due to the extremely high cost in lives it would take.

Ukraine would not recognise it as Russian territory and would seek to legally reclaim the land, which would seem both unlikely and likely take forever.

It has been mentioned that the land in the Donbass currently occupied by Ukraine is relatively small to that occupied by Russia.

A combination of Russia giving up other occupied territories, security guarantees being agreed by both parties, end the significantly high combat killings, a return to normal life for Ukrainian citizens, economic recovery etc etc

Surely surrendering the remaining Donbass makes sense, even though it’s a very unfair decision having to be made.

If the above is agreed then Russia is reportedly prepared to sign a peace memorandum and agree to a meeting at leadership level to sign peace agreement.

US appears to support this proposal, which adds to the pressure Ukraine are under to agree.

Going to be a very interesting week or two, if feels as though an agreement could possibly be achieved, if not then both sides are back to fighting it out to potentially the end.

I note a couple of recent comments made by Z “…..there is a window now to achieve peace” and “….taking back land will cost to many lives”

Difficult decisions for Ukraine, but the alternative could be even more costly.

Haven’t read full article but headline on the front page is Zelenskyy stating this is the beginning of the end of the war.

Sounding like next round of talks likely end of this week.

Thought this link was interesting in regards comments that talks are now approaching a conclusion and Ukraine and Russia are edging closer.

I am of the opinion progress is slowly being made.

The attached states a source confirming the next meeting will take place within two weeks and that a meeting at leadership level is nearing.

Chess I don’t agree that peace is no nearer.

I believe it is reasonable to say that the majority of issues appear to be agreed, based on publicly stated comments.

In my opinion the outstanding points relate to territorial and security issues mainly.

It makes no sense to have what are now frequently held peace talks if no progress is being made.

I’m not so sure zero progress, my take from the attached link is there has been some progress and that next talks are planned very soon.

Both sides are disclosing very little publicly at this stage.

Wrong, UK and I believe three other nations are in Geneva specifically for peace talks, as was mentioned on the news.

All these political advisors on here with their vast experience on the world stage, telling both sides what they should and shouldn’t be doing.

They all make it sound so easy and straightforward.
