RE: Shell's Cambo exit - any thoughts?7 May 2023 16:09
No 2, after what happened in Ukraine, no UK government can afford to ignore energy security. UK is particularly exposed with 20+ million homes using gas, a lot of electricity being produced using gas plus industrial use. The uptake of heat pumps is very poor and hydrogen is NOT a contender for home heating. Substantial amounts of natural gas will be required for many years to come in my view, although clearly not forever!
The Tories needed to be seen as doing something (hence windfall taxes), but have maintained very generous investment tax benefits and still went ahead with the latest round of drilling licences. If/when Labour comes to power, they will probably keep some sort of windfall/penalty and may stop any further licence rounds, but only a fool will destroy the industry. Labour have said the industry will have a crucial role for many years to come; in parallel with the transition to other sources of energy.
We already have enough licences in place for Deltic to become a very successful venture. Also, the value of gas used in the various projections by Deltic and analysts is quite conservative, hence the Labour threat is not existential, albeit we clearly need to keep an eye on it.
You cannot expect the Deltic management to make any comments or replies here. The recent meet the investor event was useful. Questions were invited and answered. You can always write to them directly, but they can clearly not divulge insider info. RNS' are for that. I'm confident they are working hard in the background, so I am personally just letting them get on with it and will await good news in due course!!
