Noel, I can only suggest you read the underlying UK Fires report, as The Expose really is twisting this to fit their own sensational story.
In the exec summary, this is the core question posed, which the group of academics then attempts to answer (I have no view on whether that's accurate; it may well be)
"In response, this report starts from TODAY'S technologies: if we really want to reach zero emissions in thirty years time, what does that involve?"
The big omission is what future tech can do. It does however only point out what it would take to get to net zero WITHOUT new innovation.
In shipping for example, the industry is innovation big time to develop new, green fuels, capture carbon, new engine designs and types, etc. Green shipping corridors are being identified where the infrastructure can be developed to produce and handle new zero emission fuels. Batteries are not an option for long haul shipping, neither is it for airplanes.
Their list is not what is going to happen, as that effectively would be a collapse of the world as we know it. Either there will been enough new tech developed to meet the net zero vision or if not, the net zero target will not be met; hence by default relaxed. It's good to have goals though, as that's how you stimulate innovation. We, as humans, are pretty good at it! The underlying real problem us that we are too many people using limited natural resources.
