Yunus is a setback for GCM Henry and until he revisits his doctrinaire approach, coal is sidelined. Renewables are impoverishing the west and playing into Putin's hands at the same time. One of my tipsters which really I only subscribe to for education says he thinks coal will come back for baseload where a country has it (I presume) and I think he says it because with carbon capture tech and co2 capture there is no pollution whilst gas requires infrastructure pipes aswell as grid connection and is prone to leaks in production and damaging fracking not present in coal mines and on top of the co2 emission common to both when not captured.

I am sure Bangladesh will see sense eventually and Phulbari can provide industrial space post mining if restitution to agriculture would mean loss of pristine farming land elsewhere; extra space that is needed. The pumps and boreholes will supply irrigation with cheap power from a Phulbari coal unit if that route was taken or both industry and restored arable facilities as an option.

Yunus is currently blinkered and costing relations with China and the business community by thinking a Grameen style local agrarian/craft economy will cut it with most of the population living in Dhaka and other city areas.

We need Yunus to have a change of heart on coal which in Phulbari's case would help save the planet so that he doesn't impoverish us. He is all for the poor afterall. I am quite prepared to give him plenty of time to make Bangladesh equitable if he applies his mind to the green credentials coal can offer.

The first one rather misses the recent history when AL robbed the country remitting money abroad for property until the cost of energy dried up their ability to do so. Slow to embrace Chinese willingness to help because Adani and Summit and nuclear etc were also the gravy train and took priority. It is perfectly in order to turn to the West in these circumstances as India is frosty and China is still waiting for the outstretched hand.

I remember reading that but couldn't remember any name. I think Yunus is being allowed to take too much rope with which he will probably hang himself. He is not a power broker within his country but is exercising power by signing international agreements to forward his personal vision where the rope is slack.

Coal can be hauled/freighted from the outset.

He is hoping to inculcate his ideas into society as he did for Grameen. He can't really succeed without standing in the election himself but he says that is not his plan. The old dog can't revisit coal and Phulbari without his own re-education! OPM is the greenest thing he could do to help his project along.

What he needs as well as re-education is a green banner for students to march under and see how big that crowd wold be as his vision needs its own party.

I think the Chinese and Hamid were ready for the GL as AL was running out of road. Summit etc' had dried up. I think it is good they never got round to it.
