The Senedd will probably get a Reform majority next year. That will shed some light on their plans. Their plans are simple answers to complex issues, but many voters like that. Look at some stats wrt debt. From 2010 to 2024 debt under the Tories went from 1.1 T to 2.8 T. Immigration, both legal and illegal soared under the grifter Boris. Reform will probably reduce illegal immigration as will Labour if they are to remain in power. Mass legal immigration into the west is here to stay, the birth rates tell you that. Since Bretton Woods, the financial predicament we find ourselves in is IMO a zero sum game, which Zi and the Fed are well aware of. In the meantime main stream media and politicians have found the scapegoat, yep the man or woman that wipes the at£e of the boomer generation. Reform don’t have a plan other than to try and stop the boats, which should be stopped. People need to get real.

Just got my thinking head on wrt inducted fans. The only way the RR design concept unducted fan would work was to be mounted on the rear fuselage of a T tail twin, like the BAC 111, enter the 7J7 concept as a Tail. So the unducted fan was ditched I think not because it wasn’t technically possible but because T Tail swept wing jets were inefficient designs. So maybe now with modern metallurgy etc a wing mounted unducted fan may be plausible. The efficiencies of these type of fans would be massive wrt fuel burn. Just to balance anyone’s thought process on RR being an automatic winner.

Just googled Fred Morley out of interest as I grew up in the same village he lived. He was chief design engineer at RR responsible for the Spey engine and worked along side Frank Whittle. I use wash his car as a kid not realising who he was and what he achieved. He was born 1914 I believe, and was such a brilliant human being, kind, funny and a brain the size of a planet.

My money is on Ultrafan. Anyone remember the 7j7 in the 80’s? It was a Boeing concept to rival the A320. Boeing bottled it and continued to stretch the 737 using dubious grand farther rights certification, ending up with the 737 Max, and its attendant issues. Anyway the engines to power the 7j7 were a RR concept UDF I think, or unducted fan. I asked a senior retired RR engineer Fred Morley what he thought of UDF concept? He said “with all those blades pi&&ing around at speed it’ll be to noisy and dangerous to proceed. RR ditched the concept in 1990 I believe.

I have my owns thoughts, and the 787 has a few idiosyncrasies that most other airliners don’t have. However having studied, simulated and taught the findings of many major incidents over the last third of a century I would say that you can’t always predict how the man/ machine interactions manifest themselves. We learn from incidents and hope that the industry learns as well. Early speculation is never helpful and often. Wrong.

You can reduce thrust to idle at any stage or phase of flight. The auto throttle, if engaged will try to select appropriate thrust but the clutch systems require only 2-3 lbs of force to override. Ultimately you could just disengage the auto throttle at any stage any or phase of flight.

Shareflyer. No hands would have been on the thrusts levers at the time. The engines weren’t spooled right down so thrust would be instantaneous at low altitude and partial. Spool up times from idle have a max mandatory 7 seconds which you’ll know being in a senior position at RR. A modern fan is much less from idle.,

A hoax report, and the fact that neither pilots hands will be on the thrusts from V1 where the Captain removes his hand from the thrusts levers and places it on the control if he is the pilot flying. Both hands needed to rotate the aircraft smoothly. Until the initial report is released it could be anything

Old story Badland. The thrust is mainly from Willy Walsh who is probably jealous that he is not RR CEO. Also harking back to an era when RR was was a bottom feeder and BA were Kings. IAG is now the bottom feeder.
