RR had become a bottom feeder, probably post 2001 and with the surge in power by the hour. Tufan has definitely changed that. The ethos has subtly changed as well, from an entitled prestige British company to a World leading company that cannot rest on its past glory.

Last post on the tendering process. The big point I think a few miss is that everyone, including UK Gov want RR and by default SMR to thrive. The big bucks are going to come from SMR being delivered on time, on budget. There is no place for government to blindly hand out contracts and award jobs for to a de facto nationalised power industry. Instead a sound British company where overseas investors can easily fund a secure energy source is what will make RR cash cow we all hope.

Badland, the Covid panic and tendering for major infrastructure projects bear no resemblance to each other. What are your thoughts on the tendering process and competitor cost overruns?

Do any of you really expect Government to just award expensive infrastructure projects without a tendering process? The days of allowing aerospace industries to build the likes of Concorde, whilst the Americans designed the 747 have long gone. It would seem that RR are ahead off the pack, and will hopefully win the contract. Don’t forget that many still consider RR to be a ‘burning platform’. My own thoughts are that RR is a brilliant, leading edge company and given good leadership, which it seems to have lacked for many years it can retain its position as a World leading UK aerospace company. A healthy SP will then follow.

It's gone from 70p to 2.26 in one year and will probably go to somewhere between 3.50 - 4.50 by early 2025 without any Black Swan moments. Some perspective is needed when investing.

rr engines are mainly triple spool engines, as opposed to the two spool set up on a p&w or ge engine. on a 777/a330 the rr set will typically weigh 5 tons more than 2 spool engine, but once at cruise the rr is massively economical. so rr have grown into a niche market place over the decades. they were involved in the v2500 set up that was a power option on the a320 narrow body, but the cfm 56 knocked it into a ****ed hat. i’m sure rr have the excellence to get into the sh market, but a massive commitment for the long term. turbofan seems to have a great feel for what’s needed and what’s possible. let’s see.

Yes hopefully the worst is behind us economically in the UK. I think the interim results will show very good load factors compared to TUI. The penny will then drop that JET2 is the UK's favourite IT operator, and about to become the biggest, overtaking TUI.

I think the demand will be surprisingly strong especially when hotel space may be limited. TUI will probably right size the lift from airlines and cut costs. Yield could be very strong, we'll see. But positive sentiment anyway.

As the TUI CEO Fritz Joussen said last week. Basically early days regarding the UK quarantine, give it a few weeks and diplomacy will kick in. IMO it's looking like late summer will be salvageable of a fashion, might not be profitable but it will hopefully pave the way for a return to profit in 2021, stem winter losses and give confidence to the public and economic institutions.

Indeed James. We've encountered massive unpredicted negative shear, time to spool up and watch the barbers pole hopefully!

The big picture with J2 is that it will more than likely survive. The virus will probably abate over the summer and the British public will want to go holiday in the sun. From the operational side of things J2 is more flexible, pragmatic and light on it's feet than many other operators. Non of us know the volumes or profitability of the industry once on the other side, but J2 will undoubtedly lead out of this in the UK. Traditionally airlines lead out out of recession, but this is different. IMO this isn't a binary bet, but a rocky road over the next 24 months.

You are quite right LONGWAIT. Only a few months ago bookings were strong and things were looking bright, especially as the Max issues will probably be sorted in the foreseeable, plus compo from Boeing. Anyone, and usually the bloke at the bar type who says they know where all this is going and for how long is either gloating or ambulance chasing. Tough times and drastic action for sure, but TUI offer a good reputable product, and as the Chinese have said today this virus could well be in decline by June.
