Thanks for the response on this Brand. It confirms that the R&D tax credit for Sprinter has already flowed through - so any eligibility for the 27% offered in yesterday's budget would be based on current or future R&D.

Also confirms that Sprinter and associated work in 2021 cost £54m. (if my shaky maths is correct )
We can assume R&D in 2022 was way down on this figure and probably lower even than 2020's 15.2m. We also know the company has nowhere near enough funds to start a new trial unless the money comes from elsewhere.

Which unfortunately proves my objection to your bullish statement that

Aether - yes in theory Paxlovid would be at some point a competitor. This data is very welcome and shows that the NHS's strict prescribing guidlines are correct - but that NIH ought to tighten up its advice to MDs. Also suggests that Paxlovid will not perform well on RECOVER (the Long Covid trial ) as no benefit in symptoms v placebo at 28 days

1 What was the "significant amount " claimed last year
2. How much might we claim this year - if not similar.

Let's say the company qualifies and gets a chunk of money (and you'll tell me roughly how much by answering the first 2 questions )

Not just one trial - but ny new trials. Amazing.
A new non-supported trial to stand up Sprinter would cost at least as much as the Sprinter trial. More probably - with an extra 300-400 patients needed. So that would easily be between £35m and £50m.
A new multi-virus trial - if we're talking plural - would cost at least this and easily more, to achieve statistical significance against a range of respiratory infections.
Which suggests you think we'd be getting an R&D tax credit north of £30m.

I'm interested - as your statements are pretty unequivocal. If we start with last year's R&D TC and work it our way forward from there.

the "regressive" period is a minor pushback as society decides that people born as males should never be allowed to compete in Female sports.
And that people born as males should be carefully scrutinised before admission to female prisons ( they still are admitted by the way if not considered a threat - which generallymeans if they haven't raped or been violent towards women) and that females should be entitled to only encounter other females in public lavatories with a picture of a woman on the door.
And that children should almost never be allowed to have transitional surgery.

The UK is the most tolerant society on Earth (well - if you forget ~Scandinavia for a moment ) Great strides have been made here to protect trans individuals. The whole country turns out to LGBTQ+ marches. The movement - as with many minority rights movements bases itself here. But there's a line and whilst we all want everyoine to be safe regarldess of sexual iudentification we don't want every school child forced into trousers - or maternity units to refuse to use the words breast feeding or newly trans athletes to break records and start winning female only events.
It's a balance - the transd lobby says you can wake up tomorrow and decide you're a woman - depite the lump in your trousers. That's fine - you can do that and tell everyone that you want to be known as Loretta - but you can't then go into a female toilet or play rugby with women or join the Uni swim team and smash every record out of sight.

Trans identifying people make up 0.5% of the UK population and their voice is heard loudly and clearly. They are, if anything over- represented in the national debate. When politicians get caught up in the clamour and excitement and attempt to make constitutional changes or push things too far into the realms of positive discrimination - as Sturgeon did - public opinion pushes back firmly.
Trans men and women are in a good place now - in this country anyway. They won't stop pushing for more because their leaders are fanatical, but they've achieved plenty and most of them feel utterly safe living and identifying as they desire.

Just a fast snapshot of what the Times has written at some point in the last year in my search, I haven't missed any out that I didn't agree with except fpr a couple of Comment pieces where the headline did not reveal the article's substance.

Some of these might be considered transphobic by the trans rights community but the majority of them deal with trans women in prisons/public, or the Scottish attempt to change the law on self identification which cost Sturgeon her job - the concern over trans rights in schools ( one school recently banned skirts to create a gender neutral uniform policy ) or the fear that young people are being encouraged to make permanently life changing decisions by trans lobbyists.

All valid debates on which the Times - I can't see behind the paywall - probably has strident views. Could you construe any of these as transphobic - only if reporting or debating the story and questioning the extemes of trans lobbyists is in itself a form of trans-phobia.

And my final thought on this - is that it serves us right. We're paying the penalty not just for the sins of Empire, which we have largely discharged in the 20th Century's mass migration events - but for winning the long long battle with our European neighbours - the colonial powers France, Spain and Portugal in particular - for global linguistic dominance. 1.4 billion people in the world speak English. Spanish comes next and French trails in a distant 5th with just 280m.

And we're really nice of course. The French can't even take your money with good grace, let alone offer anything approaching more. France's net migration in 2022 was 161,000 of which 118k were Ukrainians.
The Uk grew by 504,000. 168k Ukrainians.
Germany took the gold medal again with 1.1 million - almost entirely from Ukraine.

If Ukraine wins this war - as it undoubtedly will in the next couple years, the majority of refugees will return home. If the war drags on most of them will remain as long term migrants and eventually become citizens

In the hoped for eventuality that they return home - Germany's long term migration for the year 2022 will be less than 100k France's will be 43k amd the UK's will be 468,000.

Actually 245 are in prison in the UK Hold, and the ones that get all the press are only the trans women in female prisons. Particularly any men who might be on trial for 2 rapes against women and attempt to self identify before sentencing. A single case but important because the public outcry stopped Sturgeon's self identification bill in its tracks
In England 168 prisoners identified as trans women, andjust 6 are held in female prisons - all having been individually assessed.
Which takes us nowhere in particular except to say that the public and our leaders all agree that female safety is pre-eminent over trans women's rights, and the law supports this whether in prisons or public toilets. One could gop gurther and say that JK Rowling is a great hero pf this battle - having made a small stand on just this issue of female safety and remaining resolute despite the violence of her accusers.
As for the boat people - they will stop coming only when our wealthy nation is too poor to support them in the style to which they've become accustomed. 15,000 Albanians last year alone - coming because it's too good an offer to turn down. If you say we don't take as many as Germany or France - yes this is true - but we are no longer a major industrial nation and there are neither jobs nor accomodation to house new arrivals who have no interest in wiping the bottoms of our elderly and no means of self support. If the inflatables were full of the sisters of these young men our attitude to them would be different and there might be a place for them.

Hi Aether sorry that's my idea of irony. Terrible film too !! Just one hour's sleep last night, and starting to get a bit frayed around the edges. Has anyone ever trialed how much caffeine it takes to tip a sleep-deprived brain over the edge. It's a fine line for sure and I'm sure I've crossed it.
