Despite the H1 FOIL guidance it is clear that the Company expected to be hooked up and producing by now and therefore bringing in cash. If not how else would they have funded drilling with the PBLJ that they took out an option on from March 2019.

Understanding the hook up and the forces involved is of interest because it might provide some clue as to why the rope broke and whether it could be necessary to wait for even calmer sea conditions for the next time. We have been told via MGW that they need 2m or sub 2m wave conditions. On the last occasion the wave height was about 2m so although I would like to be proved wrong I cannot see them heading off for this Saturday. There appears to be no prospect of a further window during this month.

The connection puzzle and whether it is automatic or manual is of no interest to me. It will only happen after the bouy hookup which IS the critical event, and will have no effect on the progress towards FOIL.

So its back to watching paint dry or idle discussion about camels. We could discuss camels that you set fire to and whether they need filtering. Personally I prefer camels with wings.

At least the sp seems to be holding at around 45p.

When hooked up the majority of the buoy remains below the sea surface. The boat draught is about 8m and the buoy cone appears to be about 10-12 m tall so only the top 2-4m of the cone will be above surface level. Untethered the buoy floats with the entire cone section above the surface (Lerwick photos). So none of the dead weight of the buoy will be acting against the lifting force. The buoy is held down by the weight of that part of the mooring lines that are not resting on the sea bed. As the buoy is raised it lifts more of the mooring lines off the sea bed and it is this weight that the lift force counters. The further the buoy is raised more of the chain links are lifted off the sea bed increasing the amount of force require to continue the lift. The risers will contribute towards the downward force but I suspect they represent a very small proportion of the downward force. Also the section of the risers be lifted is entirely suspended so the pull exerted by the risers should remain constant. The problem is the rise and fall or heave of the boat in the swell which is causing the downward force to fluctuate as the mooring lines are lifted off the sea bed and then dropped down again.
Once the buoy cone is fully home in the turret any further pull exerted by the winch will cause a significant increase in tension on the rope. Combined with the fluctuating forces resulting from heave this is the point when the rope is subject to the greatest strain.

I was referring to the triangulation. Of course each point has four attachment points for the mooring lines so 12 mooring lines in total but each group of four lie close together. What is obvious is that once connected to the buoy the rise and fall of the boat in the swell will impose fluctuating forces on the lifting gear. Anything that can alleviate that ought to be considered.

You do not sink the bow. There are three anchoring points on the buoy and aduk is proposing three AHTS’s. Think about it.

The AM will not be leaving Cromarty over the next few days as there is no prospect of tolerable weather conditions until next Saturday. The window next Saturday is short and marginal but as it is a week away there is always the prospect it may improve. Of course there is the matter of delivery of the new rope but this will only be known for sure when they depart Cromarty at a time when there is a clear weather window in prospect.

The rather bold statement in the last RNS that they will make a further announcement when the buoy is hooked up is interesting. If there was another failed attempt shareholders would be left in the uncertain position of not knowing what went wrong. Furthermore if anything happened resulting in an extended delay they would be obliged to inform the market. So it suggests to me that they will only make the next attempt when they have a high degree of confidence in success. That means very calm sea conditions and in this season they are not that frequent.

The test is Dubai was a trial fit of the buoy cone in the turret on the dock side, the turret having been removed from the AM.
