Fleccy. Very interesting post from you. This has caused a lot of confusion in the past. If you buy 10000 shares & somebody sells 10000 shares at the same time, it all counts as 1 transaction at the the same time on sets. Whether it is recorded as a buy, sell or unknown trade depends as you say on how close it is to the bid or the ask price. Closer to bid, a sell, Closer to ask, a buy, in the middle then an unknown trade. It is always worth remembering that for a every buy on sets there is a sell. If there is no match on sets then the m.m's will do the deal & then buy or sell later to balance the book. If at the end of the day the m.m's can't balance they do it though the uncrossing trades auction. It is all above board so no going on about m.m's rigging it please from anybody. Have a good week all vod shareholders.
