An intriguing situation this. You would expect anyone trying to oust the incumbents (and in my opinion this would be to the benefit of the company and shareholders) to go to the market and buy as many shares as possible to support their position. However, this is highly illiquid and investors are not completely stupid so will compete for shares. As such, if they really try to grab a decent stake this will likely increase the share price a great deal and result in significant expense.
The problem is that the chance of success is slim given the support the BoDs are likely to be able to muster. As such, the money they will need to expend is likely to result in them having a decent holding in a company where nothing has changed (see CGNR as an example) and, should this prove to be the case, a sizeable loss should they seek to recover their money.
I can't see this attempt to seize control working to be honest unless the provocateurs are willing to force the share price much higher in acquiring a sizable stake (can they get enough?). I doubt that they will be willing to do this so the likelihood of failure is great and the share price will probably resume its lazy downwards trend (once again, see CGNR).
