Mmmmmm,, salty because its been near freezing and raining or dry ?
In the past they put salt down to stop water from freezing, so before snow, during the thaw, or if rain was likely near freezing...
Here they are salting dry roads, since it is hygroscopic it will draw water from the atmosphere, especially on a foggy night.. So ironically the salt has made the road wet, and they stay wet until the salt has cleared.. Since the roads are wet they keep salting.. The more salt the more water is absorbed, and its piled up against the curbs, as if in abundance..While the council complain they are skint..
I walk the dog around midnight, the main road is wet with puddles while the unsalted side roads are dry..
Last Jan was the first I really noticed as we had a 2 week dry period and at night the roads were soaking, with brown salty water running into the drains, while a nearby cul-de-sac remained bone dry .. Once the roads dried they salted again, and that repeated.. So far this year the road I walk daily has not been dry since that 1 night of snow..
Seems overkill, especially since its mild enough to leave the heating off
