I think that it needs to be spelt out - many people just don't get the difference between Ocado and the rest.

Ocado distribute goods from their main centres and pick orders by robots - these orders are then taken to local hubs where they are loaded onto the delivery vehicles.

All the rest distribute from their main centres to supermarkets and then the goods are picked by hand and delivered by the local delivery vehicles.

You don't have to be a genius to realise what the most cost effective method is.

This is why, with the move to online that has been accelerated by the coronavirus, that so many retailers around the world want to adopt Ocado technology.

Just to give an overview of the destination of the last three loads of the year from Kraken - before that they were all heading for Rotterdam.
Load 64 on Orpheus is now off the coast of Sri Lanka - heading for Singapore.
Load 65 on Eurochampion 2004 - remains in Scapa Flo.
Load 66 on NS Burgas -is just off Portugal and heading for Malta - will probably continue through the Canal to Singapore.

Well Amazon certainly would not want to share the technology.

As for the takeover panel - yes for online - but online only represents a very small portion of the overall grocery market in the US - so they may not be able to stop them.

The prospect of Amazon and Kroger both going after Ocado would be interesting.

I do wonder if at some stage Amazon will make a takeover play for Ocado.

There is a compelling case from Amazon's point of view for them to do so - it certainly wouldn't be peripheral to their main business, so they could afford to pay top money for a company that would certainly enhance their own business - especially with their global presence - Amazon could become grocer to the world.

I guess over the next 12 months that we are going to get a much clearer picture of which main town High Street's are going to continue to thrive and those that are going to go into steep decline.
In the south I guess Worthing, Chichester and Horsham will be the losers with Brighton, Crawley, Portsmouth and Guildford continuing to develop.
So in a way it will become a no brainer for Steve Rowe what stores to keep.

The simple fact is that there are to many stores.
In Sussex for example there are 3 main stores in close proximity at Brighton, Shoreham and Worthing - the Brighton store is obviously one to keep and the Shoreham one is a modern out of town store but why bother with the Hight Street store Worthing as well.
Likewise there are main stores at Crawley and Horsham both on the High Street - just 9 miles apart - Crawley is much busier - why bother with Horsham.

I am an Ocado shareholder and I can certainly see the magic of Ocado rubbing off on M&S in the next few months when the M&S range is sold online by Ocado Retail.

Also I think that the corvid virus has given Steve Rowe a massive boost to rationalise the companies High Street presence and bring it into the modern retail world.

Even clothing has an online future with Ocado - M&S basic ranges are to be sold on the platform.

Once again we see political developments getting in the way of a recovery - the news that China wants Hong Kong to fall in line sent stocks and Brent lower - hopefully when the markets get going in Europe this will be reversed.
Also Hurricane look likely to take a very big step down today after disappointing news.

It isn't dilution - all that has happened is that IP have sold a large part of their holding - they chose to do this by Accelerated Book Build instead of on the open market.

Well that was all relatively painless - a simple change of share ownership - it would be interesting to know who the new investors are but I guess there were multiple buyers - hopefully they plan to invest for the long term.

All good news - now all we need is for Brent to recover.

Yes, it will certainly be valuable experience, mainly I guess because it will test how the system deals with a fairly high level of returns.

The true potential of Ocado Retail has in no way be realised as yet - they account for just 1.5% of supermarket sales in the UK.
Ocado Retail basically proves the concept of the model for online sales and acts as a demo for what supermarkets globally can achieve online using high tech distribution. Ocado have even sold their concept in Japan.
It is now up to M&S in partnership with Ocado to increase market share - there is no reason why the M&S brand won't become a challenger for market share to Tesco and Sainsburys in 5 years or so.
The coronavirus had given Steve Rowe the ideal opportunity to totally scale back the High Street presence and accelerate the move to becoming the UK's market leading grocer.

The real question here is what direction the company will take next - they have committed to the Ocado deal - a great first step - but now will they have the courage to downsize the High Street business, because if they don't all that will happen is that Ocado Retail will just prop up the rest of the business.

If they do show the commitment to break with the past this becomes a great investment.

I suppose the most useful thing to do now is to look at what happened to Brent in the 2008-09 recession.

Up until now I have just been comparing it to the period 2014-16 but it seems much more likely now that it will follow the 2008 graph with the steep decline followed by a period of slow recovery and a spike that resulted in an extended period with Brent over $100.

The big question is how long will the recovery period be - I still stand by my prediction that Brent wont get above $40 this year and that the recovery will be 2021-22.

The $30 range looks more likely in the short term - not sure $35 will even last the day - we have to be realistic at the moment - recession and high supply levels won't go away this quarter - we have to hope that the US economy gets back on track later in the summer and oil consumption recovers.
