Undoubtedly the next big challenge for UK business and for businesses globally will be inflation - Governments around the world have increased money supply directly because of Covid.
It is certainly a negative for Ocado, but I think that they are much better placed than the competition to deal with it.
The main resulting problem will be pay growth, so it will be important to keep the work force to a minimum.
One important step has already been taken here. Ocado Solutions are working with the two robotics firms purchased before Christmas to develop a robotic packing line to do the final packing of customer orders - hence reducing the work force in this area. They are also looking at reducing the packing time.
The other main area that needs consideration, in my view, is to develop a Click and Collect network to compliment delivery, this would also need to rely on robotic technology - at least at busy collection sites - Ocado do have a collaboration going with another robotics company in this regard. Reducing the reliance of delivery, will be important, not just because of wage costs, but it is also likely that fuel costs will increase dramatically as well.
