Thanks for posting. It’s quite an interesting report and is misrepresented by the rather sensationalist title. Very informative and worth watching.
Of course there will be local impacts which hopefully be mitigated by careful planning and there will be ample opportunity for discussion during the public consultation. There is also plenty of support at local mayor level e.g. “It will be an honour for Portugal to be part of this project”. Also a clear understanding of the bigger picture.
There is nothing to worry investors here unduly as the outcome will be determined by the due process of the environmental approval which is approaching its final stage.

Great read Tony! Norway selling more EVs than ICs first was inevitable given the high subsidies. From another source I note that Audi sold more E-Trons in Norway than did Tesla, good news for the European car industry and battery supply chain. With Nissan planning to make batteries in the U.K., the European EV supply Li-based battery supply chain is becoming a reality.

I agree with shirazkhan39, this feels more like the level of scrutiny associated with an acquisition. I’m holding well over 2 million at an average of 3.9p but still topping up on the dips as the potential reward far outweighs the risks at this level in my view.

I topped up too on the dip before close of play. News on the EV battery front continues to flow. Audi outselling Tesla in Norway where more EVs than ICs now sold. Nissan to make batteries in the U.K. rather than the US, announced today. All European lithium suppliers to the EV battery industry will benefit from the increasing demand.

Normally I wouldn’t discourage anyone from buying but in your case I was for one relieved to hear you were out. As you frequently used to remind us “ SAV has been an unhealthy predilection for far too long...”. Why would you want to repeat (and regularly share) that pain?

Hi Wilco, my understanding is that Audi are teaming up with FAW to make EVs for the Chinese market only. It will have no impact on numbers made in Europe and as the long term aim is to use EU-made batteries, the Audi drive into EVs continues to represent an opportunity for locally- mined Lithium.

Hoping for a news update but at least we know who has been selling, probably to balance fund holdings due to the rise in price I imagine?
As for the buyer, I wonder if Muldoon has been tempted to add a few million?......

Hi IB, these days there often seems to be a ready audience for conspiracy theories. I.e the belief that GALP would not have moved to invest in SAV unless they were pretty sure the EIA was in the bag? I don’t see that the environmental lobby can complain. By asking for this deal to be included in the strategic review they are really asking to be able to consider the wider proposal. However, when the MdB project goes to public consultation everyone now has a better insight into how the supply chain will work and the material flow. The distance and route from the mine to the refinery, the jobs created or saved at the mine and refinery and the economic benefits to the wider community for example.
Of course there are opportunities for SAV to explain a bit more by publishing a few flow charts and diagrams on its website Portugal community pages? I believe Sept/ Oct was the last update and there is surely plenty more to add now ......?

Agreed. After transformational news we are only up 12% since last Friday. Plenty more to go here. I don’t believe the different lithium stocks are priced correctly relative to each other but in time they may be. The good news is that this presents opportunities!

I’m sure we are likely to see a degree of consolidation in lithium mining in Europe in particular. As has been demonstrated by GALP buying into SAV this week, the traditional energy suppliers are keen to transition from oil and gas to clean fuels and can apply for EU funding under Fair Transition to convert existing refineries to Lithium. Competition for ownership or JV combined with offtake agreements is only going to increase.

Hi Lucker, agreed at the moment all we have is “a source close to the process” to join the dots but this article places GALP, Northvolt and a miner ( who we now know to be SAV) in the same supply chain and the same bidding team for the auction of new leases. I too would love to see that confirmed in a press statement but I think we can place a high degree of confidence in this story now?
