Wishingstar you can let us shareholders worry about shorts, slaughters, value traps and Donald trump, the only shorts you need to worry about are the ones you need to take to school sports day.

It does depend how soon the tariff stuff gets resolved or at least stabilised, could be hours or years, but probably weeks. You can’t second guess stuff, even with a consumer pinch… do kids suddenly want to wear a cheap paid of puma trainers and get the plss rippped out of them by their mates, instead of the latest Air Jordans, because of a Donald Trump argument with China. Lol. If people are a bit skint a new pair of decent trainers for the summer or a new outfit for a night out might pacify the lack of a holiday or new car. Economic numbers so far, RPI, inflation, etc have all been much better than expected. Maybe people will actually have extra money… but spend it on a car instead of clothes! Who really knows. All I know is they are now consistently making close to a billion £ a year. Things can still go very wrong very quickly.

One of the issues Trump has had with Vietnam and some of the other Asian countries is that he believes they have been used to circumvent previous tariffs on China, with factories in those countries acting as little more than a post room on the way through. This is both confirmed and disputed depending who you speak to… but at the moment you’d assume something along those lines could be a viable option to avoid the tariffs if needed and may or may not be being used as we speak.

The tariffs only came in at the middle of last week, unless they end up lasting months which I don’t personally think will be the case then I can’t see any issue beyond minor inconvenience. Goldman Sachs’s said the tariffs would cause a massive recession and made a huge deal about it, as soon as they were paused said they weren’t going to downgrade recession risk, I bet once they’ve filled their boots things will suddenly seem much brighter… these media outlets and brokers are absolute clowns trying to swing markets to their own advantage. China will be weighing up economic cost vs agreeing to invest a few billy in America to give trump a cheap win, Trump will be weighing up economic cost… one phone call and this all stops.

Not until trade deals start getting announced and china gets sorted, it’s all getting a bit boring and predictable now though regardless of what the papers try and spin. China and America are one phonecall away from pausing tariffs which I suspect it will be happening very soon. In the meantime hopefully management can hoover up some cheap shares.

The reality is that anything can happen at any time, tariffs, another virus/disease like covid (or worse), world wars, Kim Kardashian saying she hates wearing sports clothes... any of these things can happen tomorrow, today, the next second. There are always uncontrollable risks but at the end of the day the most obvious risk in front of the business has been substantially reduced, whilst almost simultaneously a lot uncertainty about how JDs forward plan has also been reduced as a result of yesterday’s webinar. The price has reacted accordingly.

My take on yesterdays webinar was that they are shifting their focus from revenue growth through rapid expansion, to profit growth through efficiency. 2025 is still a write off really, maybe not as bad as it was going to be a week ago but it’s never going to be a great year simply due to uncertainty and a squeeze on the consumer. If things improve through summer and towards the end of the year, going into 2026, with the full impact of acquisitions implementation of the efficiency/cost savings, a World Cup in the biggest consumer nation in the world, I believe they won’t just exceed £1bn profit, they will be more in the region of £1.1-1.2bn(+) and a share price around that region would be justified. Risks remain.

The three short(ish) term things here that need to happen to get this back to £1+

- A deal specifically with Asia to reduce uncertainty about the reintroduction of any tariffs.

- A winding down of the ‘trade war’ with China.

- Improvements in Nike and general economic sentiment.

Risks

- Re-escalation and/or targeting our Asian suppliers to further punish China.

- Long term disagreement with China (as much as the media hype up this trade war, in reality its lasted less than a week).

- further Nike issues and poor economy

That said if you can look away for a year and a bit and ignore the noise, you’ve got one of the most obvious and relatively low risk double ups in the FTSE100.

I keep saying it, £2 by next September with ‘everything’ resolved, Nike doing better, a bit of calm and a high profile World Cup, is no stretch of the imagination. A good friend of mine reminded me earlier; this is the only market in the world where customers run to the exit when everything is on special offer.

Am in a good mood with all of this so told the Mrs to get herself prepared for a long one tonight as it’s been a while. Little does she know il be going down the pub.
