The problem with buybacks is that once they stop new shares are issued as part of staff salaries or bonuses which defeats the object of the buyback.
Buybacks need doing continually at higher levels than any new shares issued.
Get the shares in issue falling by say 3% EVERY YEAR and the SP growth will come!

It would remove approx 2.8% of shares in issue.
Only way it will benefit the SP is to KEEP GOING and not stop!

Russia has its issues and Putin is probably not the sort of man you want to cross but you really need to look at Americas history, and ours!
Do you think America has not been involved in assassinations outside of its own borders?
Or becoming involved in trying to overthrow governments it doesn't like.
Or incarcerating people without charge or trial.
Or torture.
When Russia do it Putins a "thug"

US/UK sanctions on Russia ARE US/UK sanctions NOTHING to do with BP.
BP are not just a silent partner taking their share for no input, you need to do some research into BP's long standing history in Russia.

Anyone thinking Russia will seize BP's stake in Rosneft is sadly deluded.
It will NOT happen.

Feb's results should be interesting, but the following set much more so. Oil is now trading at roughly $10 a barrel higher and that all equates to a much higher profit.
Obviously anything could happen in the meantime but 500p could be on the cards this summer!!

If he's planning on retirement couldn't he sell down say £30,000 a year and just pay the 10% tax on the amount over the allowance each year?
Obviously I have no idea of his personal finances/income.
No one wants to pay tax but he's saved it, might as well enjoy it especially as he's young enough to enjoy it.

One further point re any sanctions is for years BP operated a field in the North Sea which was co owned with Iran.
Iran has had to endure years of some of the strictest sanctions of any country bar probably North Korea, all that happened was Irans share of the money was held onto until the relationship was better.
At the end of day any sanctions will be imposed on Russia, not BP, Russian oil & gas WILL still be pumped to Europe because Germany WILL NOT vote for anything which will seriously damage their country, and its not "just a few people getting cold" much of Germanys industry would be severely hit, and neither will those, like Italy which depend on Russia for much of their energy supply.
We will see what happens but I for 1 won't be selling any of my holdings just yet!

I know how sanctions work, and I know how companies and countries get round, having worked for a major international company who dealt with Russia through a third party country.
I personally think its all posturing but I also think that should anything happen Russia will NOT be trying to seize the near 20% of Rosneft held by BP.
BP has an excellent relationship there and that kind of seizure would set the country back to Soviet / communists austerity.
