Countries very rarely run companies efficiently, and the UK is a prime example of that.
Could things have been done differently and better, of course mistakes were made but SUCCESSIVE governments have failed to do the right thing, how can this country be spending tens of Billions on HS2 when we HAVEN'T secured our energy independence, why are we still buying gas from Russia?
The system isn't great but targeting Conservative governments for mistakes made or not modified is not just a Tory thing.
Why are we not exploiting this country's resources for the good of its people? We can ask the same question of Labour!

I don't know how old you are but 70's Britain was a shocking state.
Power cuts, I can remember sitting there with candles (and this was before they became trendy!) Rubbish piled high in the streets, Britain Leyland, miners etc on permanent strike. It was sh.1te.......
Thatcher brought this country back from the brink, did she make mistakes? Of course she did but those early years is what Britain needed.
And another thing, the bloody labour politicians were all for capitulation and surrendering the Falklands to Argentina.

The general standard of living in this country is good, its not perfect but its better than many.
If you want to talk about inequality take a look at Los Angeles and the divide there.

Like I said maybe more tax breaks need bringing in for low income workers to encourage saving and to help with buying their 1st homes.
Anyway, let's see what today brings on the market!

I was generalising, no offence was meant, mach was the person talking about not being able to buy a house on a minimum wage job.
All workers should be encouraged, as with saving, getting people out to work is great for the economy.
Anyway nothing wrong with any job, was just trying to highlight (maybe badly) that if minimum wage is the only income property ownership will be difficult.

The problem is there's plenty of people with high levels of disposable income, second or even third home owners, 6 or 7 figure share portfolios.
I also know people who get paid crazy money, youngsters earning £60 to £100,000 a year.
I live in a very nice coastal location, when nice properties come on the market here they disappear within a week, if they make it onto the market at all!
All the time you have people with these levels of spending power the housing market is only going to get harder.

Times and society have changed, 50 years ago it was (generally) the man who went out to work and the wife stayed at home.
It's just not like that now, couples need both incomes.
Likewise with retirement, if you've still got your health then why not carry on working.

There will always be people who cannot afford a house, especially when you state "minimum wage" but it was bloomin hard when I bought my 1st house, especially with double figure interest rates.
If you stack shelves in Tesco's you ain't going to be buying a house, that isn't something new.
Yes I know there's people with decent jobs priced out of the market but what's the answer?

True, but my point was really to say that if say your son wanted to move out and going into rented he would be better staying put for say 12-18 months to try to get a deposit on a cheap property.
Also long term if your renting when you retire you obviously have to have sufficient pension income to furnish the rent and any potential rises.
Normally when you retire the mortgage has gone and you not longer have to have this income coming in.

Renting really is a mugs game and IMO should be avoided wherever possible but obviously that's not always possible.
Like any debt, finance or rent it is only serviceable whilst your earning that particular income.
I know it's not this easy but the "fashion" for finance should be frowned upon and saving again should be encouraged.

Unfortunately that's the way of the world.
There will never be a perfect system, all you can do is try to help the majority, you will never cure all the issues in society.

It will be interesting tomorrow once the money men have had a real good look at the figures to see exactly what this means going forward.
I haven't looked properly but if this could jeopardise any future dividend rise I hope Looney grows a pair and tells the UK that they need to reconsider the future here.
Companies make investment decisions based upon stable environments, changing tax rules just because you don't like how much profit someone is making is NOT a stable environment, and what says they won't do it again?
I'm sure there would be loads of places which would welcome BP and there money.
Anyway we'll see what the market thinks tomorrow!

I was taught from an early age NEVER to touch finance....
Also yes not everyone can afford to buy a house but before I retired I worked for a major international company, the youngsters used to start there on crazy money which I certainly wasn't getting when I was there age! But they just spend spend spend, living at home with mum and dad, £30,000 cars, £200 on a night out and then they said they couldn't afford to buy a house?
Just a question of priorities!
But I realise there's say a nurse, living near St.Albans who hasn't got a hope.

I'm not having a pop at you but that's one of the major problems with this country in that financial planning SHOULD be taught at school, from the age of say 15.
People leave school and have little or no financial guidance, some of the parents are "feckless"
Anyway sorry for your loss but it was your decision to take those investments.
