Patent life is 20 years from the date of filing. That goes for all major territories. The US is different in that continuation patents can be filed claiming earlier priority dates - very complicated, as can be seen by the number of subsequent and recent US patent filings on that web page I linked to.
Whatever other patents may be filed, AVA3996 itself will be off patent in 2032. Eight years to put a NCE through clinical development and make the cost back on sales? Not something that Avacta alone can do, I'm pretty sure, and it would be difficult even for a well-oiled comnpany to do. Maybe Alan trying to do it is a major reason why he was pushed out.
