An enigma !15 Jun 2026 20:33
My thoughts on Borders : firstly I have a small investment here and want to see the share price increase. In addition, I have a large holding in Rockhopper and almost anything that is good for the northern basin is good for the southern basin, and visa versa.
Right now Borders is valued on Darwin and possible follow up exploration success. Borders has drilled one well on Darwin which resulted in the gas condensate discovery on the Darwin East fault block; Darwin West has not been drilled and is defined solely from seismic.
There needs to be appraisal wells on Darwin. At least two. These deepwater wells are expensive (probably $100M plus, probably more) and need a deepwater rig mobilized at cost to execute them.
Let’s assume a commercial project is defined. A gas condensate project in the Southern Falklands basin means condensate export by FPSO and the gas is reinjected. Currently and in the short to medium term, there is no where less for the gas to go. Deepwater gas/condensate projects in remote locations challenge project economics.
There are numerous gas and gas/condendate projects worldwide which are stranded and Darwin is one of these.
Darwin will get developed in due course but I believe most companies of size (and Darwin requires this given the up front expenditure) will have better options for their cash.
The Southern basin will have its day but I believe that day is in the mid 2030’s.
And yet I am invested here. Is it the fear of missing out on an unexpected deal ? Possibly. Could I be incorrect and Borders get a deal. Possibly. A lot of companies have looked at Borders and a few have been in negotiations historically.
A balanced view is required with Borders. The downside is reasonably limited given the activities in the northern basin providing some “spark”.
I hope we get something positive from those who attend the AGM.
I sincerely hope either comes good for Borders and this is good for the northern basin, good for other investors and myself included.
