"Every major scientific body in the world agrees that they are effective" That is wrong, all of the studies performed so far, and there hasn't actually been a lot of proper research, has found them to have no measurable effect in spreading the virus. Remember at the very start of the pandemic when some started calling for them, health experts popping up in the news interviews advising that the masks build up a concentrated level of virus, people touch the mask, then a surface for another to pick up the virus. There were other experts telling us we touch or faces 100 times a day and others pointing out the few people who had started wearing the masks were constantly touching them. Unfortunately mask wearing became a cause celeb in the states and the comfort blanket was imposed. I remember a news piece trying to argue 'but surgeons wear masks' only for the interviewer to then describe how a surgeon will never touch his mask to stop contamination by touch - the infamous dabbing of the sweaty brow by the nurse, that's where it comes from and why masks were quickly ruled out right at the beginning. But common sense didn't prevail. And as there is now large scale data sets of populations with and without masks, it is a basic fact, they do not prevent the spread. Carefully selected people with impressive sounding qualifications put up in front of the cameras to underwrite a mass media mask campaign is not remotely the same as 'experts agree'. They most certainly don't, not before the pandemic, and not during the pandemic. Masks stopping the spread of anything is one of those urban myths that gets repeated by the mass media until it is distorted as some sort of fact.
