A company where the SP was worth more than £24 a couple of weeks ago now slipping downwards, losing more than 10% in that time. Is it sentiment, bots trading (no, not the one on Icon!!) or MM’s?

Just heard from HL. There’s a 1% F/X commission on all foreign share proceeds on top of usual trading fees, and I would need to complete a W-8BEN form.

Just found a note which will make me raise another question with HL. If the IRS recognises the HL SIPP as a bona fide pension arrangement, as it does for A J Bell’s, the US withholding tax will be zero on any dividends paid on US stocks and I should not, therefore, have to complete a W-8BEN form.

I think the timings were set out in the announcement of the Y/E results pre Christmas. The first dividend should be in February/March but the one-for-one swap is going out to some sort of consultation but expected to happen in April, so there’s no need to rush to action. However, if you’re not actually a shareholder at the moment you won’t get notified and will have to seek out information yourself. I would be surprised if the SP were to fall back below £23 now, even though events are moving quickly.

The US have now boarded that tanker, whatever its name is now, claiming it was carrying Iranian oil (to Venezuela?). Although it had rapidly changed its flag to Russia and they had sent a sub, not sure what the Russians could now do. Sink it claiming it was theirs to do with as they liked? Wouldn’t put that past them.

PS Bot, thanks for all the info. I am, as you hinted, an investor not a trader and happy enough with HL as fees are capped at £200 p.a. charged as £16.66 monthly.

We do still love you, Bot. I have asked further questions of HL because they have told me that I can hold a US stock in my SIPP. However, what they haven’t mentioned is what fees/charges they make for trading etc, in addition to whatever the exchange rate happens to do and what exchange rate they actually use. It would be good to know.

I had thought about switching to a lower/nil fee charging platform but I suspect that they make up for that in other ways - wider spreads etc.

What effect, if any, will the events in Venezuela have on the SP? Could they be positive?

Hi mm,

The general feeling for some while has been that the Covid debt has not been paid down sufficiently quickly. However, Carnival have always said they have a plan and are sticking to it, if not exceeding it.

Personally, I am not actually too bothered because my average buy price is just under £8. I just want to see the plan followed that gives me the best return which, presently, would appear to be the SP increasing rather than a fairly minimal dividend of around $0.60 per share (£0.45 roughly) over the next year.

Just my personal thought as I say.
