RE: bad news2 Dec 2021 10:38
Just some general points worthy of consideration:
- we simply won’t know how bad omicron is until the current wave is about a month old, then we will have a better handle on hospitalisation rates etc. Anecdotal evidence isn’t really useful to be honest, just because Dr so and so says anecdotally hospitals are quiet is like saying there won’t be a hurricane tomorrow because it’s sunny right now. Anyone pretending to know how ‘bad’ this variant is, one way or another, is taking out their rear end.
- a milder virus with increased transmissibility is still potentially just as dangerous due to the rate of spread. Law of averages tells you even if % of those with it are hospitalised is lower, the higher % of population infected counteracts that. A mild virus could still overwhelm hospitals due to sheer volume of infections.
- the omicron mutations prove that mutation is, and will continue, to happen. As a world community the limitations of vaccines are beginning to show. The fact governments are doubling down on vaccines, despite massive concerns about vaccine efficacy in the face of this variant shows you how desperate the situation must be, and that’s amongst developed nations with far more means and money to do something about an outbreak.
- the idea that viruses only ever mutate to become less deadly is dangerous hogwash. People espousing this view need to educate themselves: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/7839167002
So overall, it looks to me like we are back to square 1. The space is primed for a great therapeutic.
