Pretty negative there BtB. "How is the ST Micro proposition any different to all those that failed before?" Different to display in a few key ways IMO and one could make different arguments about the other product areas they've worked in.
NANO has no competitors in the sensor world that I'm aware of. Current sensors are pushing up against their physical limits. NANO's nanoparticles are moving those limits back by improving sensitivity which should open up new product opportunites for OEMs in lots of cutting edge areas (AR, automation, etc). In display any competitor could simply use cadmium dots cheaper and with better performance than cad free and by hook or by crook they also picked up Samsung as a huge competitor in the cad free space. Those were massive headwinds to NANO's success.
Success of the ST Micro venture will depend on how much it can improve sensor performance (hopeful on that as Apple didn't cancel based on quality), cost (less hopeful on that) and whether OEMs can package them up into compelling products that consumers want. Faith will be required until a predictable revenue stream comes online but it's a very different proposition to display.
