It sounds like the sensor project with STMicro is going well. However, there are plenty of new opportunities being developed in the same area. This part jumped out at me, "We are now able to offer different material sets and also new materials that are capable of absorbing much longer wavelengths of infrared light at specifically targeted bands such as 1,400 nm, 1,550 nm and 1,800 nm."

IQE recently announced that it had achieved key power and reliability milestones for its IQDN-VCSEL technology for advanced sensing applications at longer wavelengths (1100-1600 nm). Overlapping wavelength range. These longer wavelengths unlock under screen sensors for Face ID and depth sensing in mobile handsets by improving device performance while at the same time reducing cost as well as greatly improving other emerging technologies like automtive LIDAR.

IQE is in talks with several tier one customers to refine and commercialise the technology. I wouldn't be surprised if NANO were working with the same customers or IQE directly to further improve the same sensors with their nano particles. One of those customers would be Apple again.

I don't think a Nanoco win is a foregone conclusion. I have no way of knowing which way the case is going to go. It's certainly not the case that poor little NANO has no chance against super duper Samsung though.

By baseline I mean that at half year 2020 they guided £165m, the sp tanked then they increased it with a trading update and did the same again up to the £180m we eventually got. I just wonder if they're playing the same game again.

Reference to COVID is simply to try to explain why they are ordering new machines in Taiwan and not Wales. As we come out of it over here with accompanying infrastructure spending boost we'll push 5G roll out creating demand for the Welsh site. No doubt Trump's Hauwei nonsense played a role as well. Asia could push ahead with Huawei equipment while the rest of us couldn't.

Machines pay for themselves in 3 years so yeah the cost will weigh on the bottom line for a while.

Absolutley right Gotrader although I'm not onboard with the focus on Wales. Recent investment and restructuring was global with Wales being just part (albeit the biggest). Also, we can't complain about costs rising in Newport when new machines have just been ordered in Taiwan. I don't think I'm far away with COVID being the reason for this and that the Welsh site will become much busier as the western world recovers.

The way I see it there no reason for anyone to buy shares during H1 given the latest outlook. They will get £90m revenue. Only getting just over half of what they need to make a profit at the end of the year. There's an extra £30m cost so with the same economics we're actually looking at £25m loss give or take one offs. I guess that's why the sp has dropped. However, Tim Pullen has stated new machines will only be ordered if the demand is in place for them to start genereating revenue. This means they will expect an increase in H2 from the new ones. Furthermore Pullen has set a trend of under promising. New orders could come in during H1 and the licensing model for filters changes the model. The company appear very confident they will be successfull products. That will start to address the margin problem.

So, can't see anyone buying and can understand shorts being taken out but I think the outlook is a baseline and any change will be upward.

I'm not happy with this drop. I can see why it's happened but it's overdone. No, I don't see any conflict with the NWF. IQE and NWF don't supply the same services. Along with the catapult they are supposed to create synergies not conflicts.

The IP is not discarded. They are not building out products with it and so have written down the value of the minimum contractual payments to the previous owners for accounting purposes. That'a all. That IP came with other IP they are pursuing and is expected to quickly provide significant additional revenue so the deal for the IP overall looks like a good one.

With the ongoing balkanisation of the technology industry the Newport foundary will be supporting US and EU customers whereas Taiwan will cover Asia. Looks like new machines have been ordered in Taiwan because the east has handled COVID a lot better than the west and either didn't suffer much economic impact or are way ahead in their recovery. As more chip manufacturing is opened up in the US (Intel for example) and western countries recover we will hopefully see the next set of new machines ordered for Wales.

Sell off is overdone IMO. It rose to 90p off the back of the 2H trading updates which was probably too much. Today's forward guidance says it'll do the same again though. Not bad at all but it takes the momentum away. Guidance from the company has been conservative for a year now and they have said that this is simply because China is taking a breather with it's 5G roll out before it resumes. Any surprises in the next half is likely to be to the upside and I wouldn't be surprised if there were some.

Against expectations revenue was significantly up in the second half. Guidance was raised twice in successive trading updates. I think this year more of a 60/40 split was expected.

Is the patent write down you're referring to the non-filter cREO? That was announced toward the end of last year in it's own RNA. Not necessarily a negative. I think they bought that patent along with one for filter based cREO. Ditching development on the non-filter side was a cost saving measure while they concentrated on filters. Sunsequently great success was announced on the filter designs. They are now going out to customers for trial and eventual licensing. Being licensed product means it will be nearly all profit for IQE and a new business model. They are seen as a significant new source of revenue as they are needed for mm wave 5G.
