I believe the INP part isn't the QDs (although we don't know what NANO is using to make it's new longer wavelength dots) but the VCSEL emitter. InGaAs are very much part of IQE's roadmap. Already in the product portfolio infact but only just made available to customers. As they are alraeady a major supplier of iPhone sensors and Yole states that only Apple will be able to afford to deploy this technology in the near term it very much does look like they're working on sensors that will combine advanced IQE VCSELs and STMicro sensors with NANO QDs to get rid of the notch.

Glad to read yesterday's update. This is the one project that could feasibly be described as low hanging fruit.

Crazy really when the plant is such an insignificant part of the global semi-conductor market and they're only selling the old technology part anyway. Claims of national security risk are ridiculous. I must be living in a prallel universe if UK infrastructure is strategically dependent on the chips produced in Newport lol

I'm assuming here but I hope that there are a whole load of other patents and not just those ones needed to produce the new materials. Otherwise once those patents lapse in a few years anyone with the budget and skill could reverse engineer them.

Sorry pm444. IQE doesn't make semiconductors but it's products are used in bigger products that do. It's possible that companies making cars, phones, etc place lower orders with IQE because they can't get other chips. Or larger orders with IQE if they accelerate the replacment of smeiconductor chips with higher performing compound semi-conudtor ones. However, so far there has been no effect.

Nanonano, if the case fails it will be because Samsung has managed to invalidate NANO's display patents. That would indeed destroy all past claims and future revenue from those patents. One hopes the company wouldn't have made the same mistakes with the nano particle patents being used in sensing though.

I think it's for earlier stage companies. I must say all that stuff about the investor doing the application looks extremely dodgy to me. I bet it's just a way for the government's chums to end up owning 30% more of a company than they pay for with the public paying the rest.

I very much value Sweenoid's posts and hope he doesn't disappear. I don't always agree. I can't for the life of me work out the mass market use case for AR and read plenty of convincing articles making the case that HAMR isn't going to win the storage race for example but he's only passing on what the company's said based on their market research. Which I assume is better than mine.

On the face of it that looks like appalling mismanagement. However, one article online states that, "Under the deal, Nelson is being permitted to spin off the compound semiconductor part of NWF and he plans to reinvest his proceeds into this new venture, according to this person. He is also being permitted to keep the Newport Wafer Fab name."

If they're selling off the legacy semiconductor only technology, albeit for a tiny price, and can keep the watch sensor, power converter compound stuff separate it makes more sense.
