Aberforth are fund managers, very rare in my experience have fund managers ever launched a bid, after all their businesses are hardly complementary are they ?
Nice try but I do think you need to try harder before you start talking about a takeover from a few fund managers who run 2 investment trusts & a smaller companies fund out of Melville St (I recall) in Edinburgh....

Looks like Merc are trying to push their shares a bit, & their EIS funds with a webinar next Thursday at 16.00 featuring some of their exits etc.
Seems like their emphasis will be on Locate, Source & Axis in this puff.
Encouraging to see a bit of PR, though something inside me is asking if we are coming up to some option expiry date....

Indeed Aberforth have quite a canny reputation in small companies, according to the FT they held 3.99% on September 1, so they are clearly adding to their holding.
So now apparently the only larger collection of shares is held by Hargreaves Lansdown, which is of course just a bunch of private investors who use that platform, they show as 6.2%.

Rather a lot of cash on the B/S at present I fancy and despite HL saying recently that people returning to work will mean their platform will be used less, my fancy if that JIM makes a lot from the back office work which is farmed out to them, especially compliance. However a second special in the same financial year is a bit on the hopeful side to me, not that I wouldn't be delighted to be proved very wrong !

I don't think you missed much at all, there was the current trading update which on the surface was quite encouraging but on closer examination it did leave a few loose ends so we really need to see the accounts when published.

Q4 announcement due on or before 11Nov to go XD on 18 Nov.
Last year it was 3.125p I seem to recall, so not long to wait, I wonder if we might see 3.5p this year, that would certainly be rather pleasant eh ?

I live in London too & have reported similar tales.
Mars, of course, are barely in London & tend to have suburban pubs not city centre pubs, which gives them a considerable edge.
Nevertheless the old habit of "going down the boozer" is not what it was in many parts of the UK, worryingly for pubs, they apppear not to be the draw that they always were for younger people so the headwinds tend to prevail. My guess is things will be better a year or two after lockdown but they never tend to return to precisely where they were when you have this fundamental change, that is a legitimate fear.

You are quite correct, it is a decent company but it has hit headwinds, which many of us were discussing on this board.
What is interesting is rhat Sadanby appears to be so sad that "barrow boys" are upsetting his ramp, & as for people (there were 2 or 3) suggesting it would "rocket" on the numbers this week now sound about as loud as a Brocks banger on a wet Guy Fawkes compared to the Saturn 5 that they were predicting.
Most silent of all, needless to say, is the apparently deranged Super discharger, who does nothing in most of his posts other than brag & boast.
Which when you have dementia, as he appears to, merely makes him the target of fun.
Remember the old adage, "it's never as good as it looks & it's never as bad as it looks", a very true summation.

Actually I pretty much agree, but the largest sincle component of AUM is, I believe, Northern vct and their performance since 2016 & the new rules started has been glum, tbh, whereas previously they were stellar.
Note that at least 1 of the 3 head honcho's who sold out to Mercia has already walked away.
Given Merc's expectation of Northern this could be a warning.
Northern are due to attempt a £50m fund raise this tax year, if they succeed OK, if not take care as vct's generally have been flying off the shelves so far this year.

Indeed the debt was always his problem, it was only with the change of Chairman before the pandemic that this started to be addressed. RF fixed his debt in a derivative type of transaction which collared the debt when rates were going down.
I had several email exchanges with him over that as if that had been addressed, (& it could have), we would be in a far stronger position today, probably with all of the brewery to boot.

RF was at the helm for 20 years but hardly successful was he ?
Divi cut to zero and 60% of the brewery sold for a song to the Scandi's, then a 105p offer rejected without even submitting it to shareholders was that a success, get real ?
