I presume it would have to be 'green' taxes on the profits of oil companies....used to fund R&D into green businesses and also to 'encourage' people to switch. But it is unlikely to happen because politicians know that voters will kick them out if their bills go up significantly.
To me it looks like everyone is searching desperately for someone to pay the bill for 'going green'. I haven't heard anyone explain where the money is coming from......apart from Boris & his magic money tree (aka UK tax payers!!).

Unfortunately in America the climate debate is still being seen as a political football. It doesn't help when the only way a Californian Democrat can grab attention is to ask questions about a jar of M&M's, like they are in play school. They should have used lego!!
No wonder people are turning off politics....that circus in America isn't going to solve anything.

Getagrip, you are correct. There is no such thing as a free lunch. What is important is knowing the true environmental cost of 'everything' we use. Sometimes doing what one thinks is the right thing isn't optimal.

It is scientifically incoherent to simply extrapolate data from 30 years ago...just to try to prove a point. There are potential feedback loops within the Earth's climate - both positive & negative - that the scientists don't fully understand at the moment that could make simple linear extrapolation incorrect. In next few weeks we will find out if the 'Do Nothing' strategy in the hope that climate change is over-hyped is something that world leaders are still following.....there comes a point when 'Do Nothing' equates to 'Missing the Boat'!
As for saying that UK doesn't emit much Carbon, I would say it is partly because we have exported our manufacturing & carbon emissions to third world countries....and we now expect them to bear the cost of going clean. Doesn't seem fair to me!!

I remember back in early 2020 when the virus first started growing and 'some' investors suggested it was a hoax and/or it wouldn't impact our way of life....as we know they were wrong.
The one thing we found out is that to avoid the greatest pain our leaders have to act quick and decisively...or it gets more expensive and harder to control in the the end.
Same with climate change. We have delayed & obfuscated until we have reached the point of no return.....and the costs have sky rocketed. It is 'probably' almost too late.
Good for big engineering projects because governments will be throwing money at big (huge) projects to counteract the consequences of climate change BUT bad, because we have to live on a planet we have managed to mess up.

Casapino, So it's acceptable to have a weekend shopping break in NewYork but it isn't OK to have face to face meetings on arguably the most important issue facing civilisation?!..give me a break.
I suspect one needs to ask ones children & grand children their view on the subject of climate change....I suspect they will have a different perspective. They weren't the cause for our generations (albeit ignorant) mistakes, however they have to live with the consequences. As I said I will be dead and can only wish them good luck and the thin hope that the science is wrong.
The Seychelles & the Maldives aren't under water....really!!! Those island communities can see the water levels approaching on a yearly basis, which must be sickening and you suggest they should be glad. With the amount of glacier retreat and loss of artic sea ice I am sure they will be glad of your scepticism...like king **** the Great I'm sure it will keep the oceans from rising.

Unfortunately we don't have the option to do nothing....I wish we did, but we don't.
If we wait until the 'later decades of this century' for the technologocal advances to tackle climate change then it will be too late for many communities & cities around the world....sea level rises alone will cause food insecurity & mass migration on a scale never seen before (if you believe the scientists). Thank god I won't be here....

I suspect it took more than one 'stupid' motorist to create the fuel shortage.

It is about supply & demand surely, not whether motorists are stupid or not. If our raw materials operate on a just in time basis with minimal or zero stocks, then even a slight increase in demand can upset the fine balance of things, creating panic buying.
I am sure there are economists who have written prize winning papers on the subject. But it is interesting how thin the veneer of civilisation can be.

SHorting seems to create instability in a share and is prone to manipulation because the loss/reward can be so high. Personally I think stock markets would be better without it.
Recently groups of PI's have banded together to buy shorted stocks, thus creating a short squeeze....which unsettles the markets because hedge funds have to sell other investments to cover their losses. I notice the market regulators quickly clamped down on the PI groups betting against the hedge funds....but again they seemed to be manipulated by one or two people who were in it for profit.
There isn't much of a level playing field....and it will only get worse.

Boris is going to commit to walking everywhere, which means his fleet of ministerial Jags can be sold to help reduce the national debt (2nd hand car prices are really strong at the moment). He has also agreed to remove the central heating system in No. 10 and use the hot air he generates to keep it nice & toasty!!...in fact they have commissioned a feasibility study to see if he has the capacity to also heat the Houses of Parliament.

At the moment every additional domestic gas & electricity customer is going to lose SHell Energy money....I don't know how it is financed but presumably the parent company will have to subsidise this loss. It is an expensive way to get critical mass, I'm fairly certain there won't be any other suppliers who will want these extra customers at the moment. Somehow gas price has to drop and the standard variable tariff has to match wholesale energy prices to give suppliers at least a small profit or they will exit the market....apart from Shell of course which has unlimited resources apparently!!!
