Boyobach, the important thing is not to allow pessimism to become fatalism or giving up. Perhaps the pandemic has shown that human endeavour can do wonderful things e.g. vaccines. However the nationalistic way we distribute our vaccine supplies brings me back to earth (with a bang!). But for climate change I am strangely pinning my hopes on China. Their autocratic government can change things with the decision of one man and that decision is final, nobody objects, no one argues about budgets or planning applications or requlations, it is just done. So I'm hoping that China goes 'green'....but I could be waiting a long time.

He has just got his infrastructure bill through.....but lost the governorship of Virginia. Win some, lose some.

The real 'problem' is that when scientists & Greta stand up and tell us what needs to be done to avoid the worst effects of climate change we all say they are overreacting, that things won't be so bad. So we do nothing or very little. It is a gamble...the ultimate kicking the can down the road.
If the scientists & Greta are correct then over the next few decades we have some very hard choices - expensive choices - to make.
When faced with a difficult choice the easy option is to put it off or pretend it has gone away. Until it comes back to bite us. The time has come - as a planet - to decide what we are going to do. It applies to individuals, countries and companies....we all have a part to play. I hope in 20 years time we look back and ask ourselves "Why didn't we do it sooner because life is so much better"...the optimist in me. The pessimist in me says "We are all doomed". At the moment the pessimist is on the ascendency!

But BoE have a target of 2% inflation, if it is above that the Governor has to write a letter!!...I expect he has already printed off enough copies for next 2 years.

I don't really understand how cost-push inflation works in an economy. Costs increase for a company - wages and/or raw materials - but productivity remains the same, so management have to increase the cost of their product to maintain profits (simple enough!)....but consumer demand could (in theory) decrease for that product - either consumers stop buying the product, buy less or buy a cheaper alternative - so demand decreases. The company might see increased costs and falling demand for what they make....not good!!
Increased wages have to coincide with increased productivity....but there is one person in this country who doesn't seem to understand this small detail....unfortunately he is in charge.
Raw material (& fuel) cost inflation might be temporary (due to pamdemic)....wage inflation might become more deep seated because of Brexit & political ideology.
Have I misunderstood something?
PS I wasn't going to mention the B-word but it just popped up!!

Indications that UK government is preparing to withdraw from 'parts' of the NI Brexit deal....that could really spook the London stock exchange. Hard to see the EU reacting positively. Biden would also be annoyed.

I didn't do economics at school...how does one tackle 'cost push' inflation?
I presume having a PM who is actively encouraging wage inflation to tackle staff shortages wouldn't be part of the solution?

I reckon 'almost' everyone was surprised base rate remained unchanged, it seems to be a recurring theme of this administration.....delay as long as possible until it is 'almost' too late, then have to intervene with more drastic measures.
An increase back to 0.25% would have had very little real impact but it would have sent the message that the BOE was willing to act if required. The governor's attempt to explain the dither was rather pathetic...I kept wishing Mark Carney was still in charge.

So 'unless' the SP starts to go up, BARC will start to be seen as a 'takeover target'....in your view....which would presumably mean the SP increasing....because it is a 'takeover target'. So squaring that circle...the SP is going to rise no matter what...in your view?!

Methane reduction can come in a variety of forms. Industry emits a lot of methane as well as farming. Reducing leaky pipes in oil & gas installations is an 'easy' fix. Animals can be given food additives to reduce their methane output, indeed UK farmers are 'apparently' some of the best in the world at this, so we can export our practices to other meat producing parts of the world. And yes, we will have to consume less meat, which will 'probably' be healthier for us all.
PS If we have less meat but of a higher quality then farmers will 'hopefully' be able to balance less livestock with more valuable animals....the problem is that post Brexit we sign trade deals that flood our market with cheap meat from parts of the world with lower environmental standards. The answer is a methane tariff on imports....but we wouldn't get any trade deals.

So we are going to have farmers planting trees to compensate for the Amazon rainforest that is being cut down so we can have cheap corned beef and palm oil beauty products. Makes sense!!

Too many people seem to think we cannot use the military to fight a war because they would have to use helicopters & aeroplanes to get there!!...some things are worth the carbon footprint.

DTN, I don't think Greta flies very much, if at all.
I believe she got the train to COP....or she might have walked across the North sea.
She went to the UN in New York a few years back and she sailed there....a professional crew volunteered to sail her across the Atlantic, presumably because she knew she would be accused of hypocrisy if she flew.
I reckon if she farted in public some people would blame her for emitting methane!!
BTW I wish I did half of what you do for the planet...you tree hugger!!

If more people have EV's then their is less dependence on petrol & diesel. But then the debate shifts, where do we get the extra electricity to charge the EV's?.....especially since most will be recharged during the night when the sun don't shine. So what if the wind don't blow (which happened recently)? Where are we gonna get all the electricity from?
They are talking about Sizewell C nuclear plant but that hasn't even been started yet.....don't panic!!

It is a transition away from fossil fuels to greener forms of energy. The speed of that transition is the important bit. Oil companies will want a slow transition in order to maximise their profits from oil & gas, which will give them the resources to invest in greener technologies. The dilemma for companies like SHell is that they don't necessarily have control over the transition process....if the switch to green energy is rapid - due to cheap green tech from China (for example) - they could be left with rapidly falling revenues and insufficient resources to invest in the green side of their business.
It must be a tricky dilemma for O&G management. I expect they will adopt a wait & see policy, combined with some limited well advertised greenwashing. A leopard cannot change its spots.....or more prescisely it takes a long time over many generations for the 'spotty' gene to weaken due to natural selection. Hoepfully SHell management are fleet footed enough to take decisive action IF (big IF) the green revolution is rapid.

MrWolf, yes we are well fertilized....I'm still recovering from the 'fact' that one can eat the dirt the mushrooms are coated in.
Having a reliable source of information is important...I like to believe that Wikipedia is fairly accurate (but am aware it can be manipulated). Likewise any news outlet can be manipulated - journalists are only human. The reliance of some journalists on their contacts in government can sometimes make them little more than mouthpieces.
Same with big business, we only get the authorised version of events...unless we know someone inside who has 'the truth'. Usually things aren't always black or white, sometimes things are grey. Nuance isn't always easy to understand & doesn't sell newspapers...so we lap up the easily digestible version of the truth in headline form. We are only human & life is busy after all.
It was intersting to see Amanda Staveley invest in Newcastle -along with some other people. I don't expect player motivation will be an issue from now on....fail to please the new owner and bits of them could be snipped off.

It was always slightly odd to have a Uranium mine in Spain....I can imagine planning in other less bureaucratic countries would be simpler (usually involving a bank transfer to a Swiss bank account). I feel sorry for genuine investors. Hopefully this isn't the end of the road/mine.
