Daisydog - at MIRIS which is the largest battery test site in Europe, which I was visiting in the last couple of weeks, they have 2x 250kW diesel gensets, which occupy a footprint of about 1/2 a 40 foot shipping container (excluding fuel storage). The UET VRFB at Eskom which is 120kW / 250kWh occupies about the same footprint. So the gensets are a little more space efficient, but not so much - it depends on how long you expect a UPS to last for (my computer one lasts less than 10 minutes) and whether you are prepared to tolerate a genset belching diesel fumes into the vicinity of a hospital.

For very rarely used backup supply, eg UPS, where the rest of the grid might be down, diesel gensets are not an unreasonable choice and would contribute little in terms of overall greenhouse gases.

Better to have a grid made reliable through the use of the batteries that are cycled daily so as to peak shift PV and other sources of very low carbon energy,

Unfortunately the XR line walks straight into the 'the amount of battery storage required is unfeasibly large and uneconomic' argument put by Hans Werner Sinn. Daisydog - he's not really an energy guy, his main interests are sold state devices. I am familiar with this field also. The engineering department in Cambridge is notoriously of its own mind, good luck to them, but on this one this chap is out on his own.

Your quotation " 3,400mtV – 2020 including Vanchem" is clearly factually incorrect - the quoted 3,400 number is for Vametco ONLY.

I don't expect an apology but it would be nice.
