How were the Americans ever going to negotiate a peace settlement without involving Europe or Ukraine? Basically Trump tried to facilitate Ukraines capitulation. The Trump administration is incompetent which must be highly embarrassing for any American with half a brain.

Like you say I think Putin is just trying to keep Trump on side at present. He doesn't want a ceasefire or an end to the war until he can declared some kind of victory. He hasn't achieved any of his objectives yet with 1million dead or wounded. Ending the war now will expose Putin at home and in front to the likes Xi Jinping what a loser he is. Then the chances are he's dead. He certainly won't end the war or have a ceasefire cause Trump says so. The sooner the Americans wake up to the fact there's not going to be any peace while Putin is alive the better.

Trump and Witkoff haven’t got the first idea what’s going on in Ukraine or the Russian mentality. Signing Crimea over to Putin and carrying on with business as usual is just kicking the can down the road. Putin will be back, probably after Trump has gone, but it wouldn’t be his fault anyway.
