Im my mind the cwu are like a football agent. Promising a better financial outcome if you stick with them . My problem is that we already have great t and c and a great pay package. It’s human nature and the culture of the people that if someone offers you more than what you currently have you will stick with them to get even more, even if your quite well taken care of for what we have to do in terms of our jobs .
I recall a cwu message saying we are paid 30% better than our competitors, which is fantastic and been made to happen by the work of the cwu championing for better t and c than everyone else. But we are still 30% above our competitors and some are looking for more. Our t and c and phenomenal I could list and it would be quite a long list, but I also accept the stories of poor application of standards and poor management of staff that would make it seem like the job is not great. But those elements are few and are far outweighed by the positives .
No one is going to win when it’s a race to the bottom. We need to remember that and be mindful that we already are well taken care off and that perhaps we don’t actually need to protect our t and c as Rico isnt taking what we already have away. He has been quite forward in saying that. But with the footballing analogy above , if someone can promise you more your going to go with that. The human factor plays a massive role.
Don’t think anyone is in doubt that we need to change as a business and move to parcel automation for efficiency savings ( and a whole lot more to boot).
We need to make sure we have a job and continue to provide for our family’s and keep a roof over our head. We are not too big a company to fold and cease trading, global companies could be listed in this text where they have not managed changed and capitulated and ceased to trade. Royal Mail is no different in that aspect, we’re not too big that it can’t happen to us.
I’m not saying roll over and accept pay cuts etc , compulsory redundancies , that’s not even being mentioned but if we don’t get together , transform , make more money and boost efficiency then we won’t need to worry about the cwu, because no one will be in employment with Royal Mail . There won’t be one. And when we do go and get a job in Poundland ( someone mentioned that below) come back here and talk about how well you are paid and how good those t and c’s are and let’s compare with what you had and what you have. You will be so much more worse off.
We need to take action and fast. For all our sakes
