I am having a read through they Taylor review of modern working practices now. Initial document is 116 pages long and then you have the responses which are in zip files I won’t be able to access from my phone . Interesting read

Just want to say I have learned heaps today. Thanks for all the comments, questions and points of view . I feel more knowledgable now On some things than what I did at the start of today . Thank you all .

So on the question of government responsibilities towards the uso , they have a responsibility to protect the uso which has answered one of my questions so thanks @Oli

But they are not duty or legally bound to protect the current provider of the uso ( which is currently RM )
should we fail .
That said , in the defence of it , in the report numerous times it’s stated that RM are currently the only postal company with the infrastructure to uphold the uso .

the report was in 2014. Which is 6 years ago now .
Many of our competitors have advanced on us over that 6 years , i would agree they have not advanced in total infrastructure as in posties on the ground , but they have developed and adopted and trialled some of those policies . I put this Idea out there in the not so distant future ...

we know there is a cash buffer from the govt, lets say instead of chucking that money to RM who may have failed in a few years time to uphold the uso the govt decides to invest go with another postal operator . If it’s not profitable for Royal Mail to have the uso I imagine it won’t be profitable for anyone to have the uso , but the depth of public feeling at the time may be ... “give it to someone else to see what they can do”. ... That is not outwith the realms of possibility

No detail at all as to what actually happens if RM collapse and are unable to achieve the USO.

2.22 The government also retains the ultimate risk of delivering the universal service but following the privatisation it is given more protection in the form of an equity buffer. The Postal Services Act 2011 provides for a special administration regime should Royal Mail fail altogether. The Department assessed the residual risks following a sale, but did not quantify the financial implications of corporate failure.

So it talks about if Royal Mail fail and there will be a special regime should “Royal Mail fail all together “

That’s a totally different matter .

Now if “Royal Mail all together” , I don’t read that as Royal Mail gets protected , because we currently hold the uso. I read that as if we fold then they will assess next steps. Nowhere does it mention that the current holder of the uso will continue as a result .

Perhaps just the way I’m reading it .

I would of thought the company would love to split the letters and parcels up.
Would the letters stand alone in the future?probably Not.
Then the Uk Gov take over the loss making letters and a proffitable parcel business moves on.

That could be a scenario but while we are on this , and here is a question I don’t know the answer on , that bit when you said Uk gov take on letters - are they duty bound , would it go for tender or something like that . What’s the scenario of uk gov say “not up to us” could they do that in this scenario and what happens next .

Lots of permutations all of which little people like me won’t get a say in the actual decision making but what we do have is only a point of view .

@eastend what I meant by sacrifice and the market being open is that Royal Mail have been sacfriced for years to allow our market to be opened up to allow our competitors the chance to compete against RM within the market . And I think that’s been achieved from the side of regulation and now it’s time to deregulate the market to allow Royal Mail to play on that even field.

My point was Royal Mail pay above what the rest of the market sector pays and that’s a fantastic thing.
Brought about by the Cwu and Royal Mail working together And in agreement and when profits come , it helps pay for that the great t and c’s. That’s a business model at work and should work for its people and the company . Be

I guess I am of the opinion it’s great what we get paid and I am defeated , but nurses should be getting paid more (without me being paid less) so on that point I agree with you lol

@eastend no one would go for worse terms your right , also yes our competitors must be laughing to the bank as we do deliver all the parcels that it would cost them money on .

I have been wondering for years when our market will be deregulated a little bit as the market is now totally open , there is no monopoly on parcels , no one wants letters apart from us , what’s stopping them like you say?
How much longer (like the days of BT having to open up their infrastructure for their competitors ) will RM
be sacrificed n this way. I honestly think the mail market is totally open now .

No one deserves to earn less than what they currently do .

@200. we truly get much better than just a decent pay for what we have to do. I am not playing down the level of commitment shown from employees of the business who work hard for their money. But cmon. Locally in my office last year we had a list of wages by profession across a range jobs and it’s staggering when you see our wages higher than than certain levels of nurses in the Nhs (for one example.) Royal Mail featured quite high on that list I may add.

That’s for asking for opinions from others, it’s a nice trait to have.

Not one single comment you have made that I disagree with. We are paid 30% more than are closest competitor (which is a great thing) But importantly not to lose sight of that .

It’s human nature to value yourself higher than why you are actually worth . Just remember to all that work in Royal Mail . We are just a number and there are people out there who would love To have our job. Biting the hand that feeds when your 30% better wages than your market rival is just crazy.

Also Covid studies have shown that 4 degrees Celsius seems to be the magic number . Temps keep above that your much less likely to have the more serious of issues
Go below that and expect a round 2 to come back from Covid. So they say .
