Sanctions won’t be lifted quickly , but it will move things in the right direction now. The narrative will be on winding down or reducing the conflict , rather than maintaining. It probably means a couple years knocked off war length, but still a few years to go. Sanctions won’t be lifted all at once. Could take a decade of slowly removing them

There are plenty people who will take risks and have ability. What has been occurring over decades is highly paid jobs or education required for high paying business ownership have been a closed loop.

In corporations it is the same, jobs in prestigious companies are saved for certain people, cronies, nepotism. And in regular senior jobs they are filled by folk who didn’t retire as they could infinitely fill their pension pot.

This change to pensions will cause a lot of people to consider early retirement and a new generation will backfill those otherwise untouchable vacancies.

If there’s money to be made there’s always someone ready to step in if someone else isn’t happy they lost their tax incentive.

Jim that’s why I said there should be some tapering, 40% is quite a hit.

But it tends to be that the more money you have the easier it comes.

For example , compounding £10k by 10% is better than compounding £1000 for 10%.

Just to add. Before the budget not only could people inherit £1m , an infinite pension pot , but also a grey area of cash transfers within lifestyle means . Plus any off ledger assets and cash handed over in envelopes.

So with simple planning a wealthy family can still band over shed loads. Its only those with huge sums that it gets tricky for.

Tories should never have gone through with austerity to the extent that they did. Rates were low and they could have borrowed for growth.

Unfortunately the countries poorer as a result and so while I hate the idea of taxes across the board going up it’s the only way of balancing the books of borrowing to invest.

It’s ok arguing with what’s labour are doing but if you look at towns across the country austerity hasn’t been dished out equally. Go to places up north (NE NW) and compare that with the south or midlands and you can see where the tories cut for many years and where they didn’t as much. Boris was more left but he didn’t reverse the trend.

The main area of contention is pension pots but what Labour have done is incentivise wealthier people to draw down and use their pots rather than leave it sat invested and incur 40% estate IHT .

Anyone who can’t draw down £50k a year and their 25% and get it out of the pot before death , probably has a over a million in it and that would have been a tax break for the wealthy on top of the £1m couples can already hand over to descendants.

So this was really a budget targeting the higher end of middle classes and upper classes , rather than hard working working class people.

It doesn’t seem completely fair but it does do the best we can hope for to achieve an injection of cash for growth in the economy.

That pensions were not included in the estate was a tax break for wealthy people.

It meant you could shove all your excess income in a pot that didn’t incur tax and could be inherited on top of the £1m that can be already handed down plus lots of cash transfers that aren’t counted.

The punitive tax only occurs if you don’t take the cash out as draw down or annuity before death.

You’d only be much worse off if you are taking more than £50k a year out of your pot and paying 40% tax . If you have so much in your pot that you don’t have enough years to live to draw down the whole pot before death , then you’re probably the very people they intend this tax to target.

At my work place only retirees that were senior management could possibly be affected by this change or those that were favoured for the very top earning overtime in the highest grade of team member. They are Tory voters not Labour so I can see why this measure was taken. It just isn’t fair that people were not forewarned or there was some tapering.
