One third of Jet2.com routes and 42% of its seats in direct competition with Thomas Cook Airlines

In total, the two airlines overlapped on 106 routes. This represented 33% of Jet2.com's 322 routes and 47% of Thomas Cook's 225 routes for the week of 23-Sep-2019 (the date of Thomas Cook's liquidation).

In capacity terms, the overlap was greater. Thomas Cook operated on routes accounting for 42% of Jet2.com's seats in that week, while the overlap covered 49% of Thomas Cook's seats.

Ryanair passenger Billy Shearer made the unfortunate mistake of ordering the Irish breakfast for a morning flight.

The website describes it as ‘the perfect option to fill up and start your day with’.

The unhappy diner begged to differ when he was served ‘a monstrosity’ of soggy potato waffle, shrivelled button mushrooms and congealed white pudding.

Not only was Ryanair the worst performing airline in our survey overall, it was also the only carrier to receive a terrible one-star rating for its food.

Boeing 737 MAX Delays Prompts Ryanair To Close 4 Spanish Bases

The lack of aircraft has led Ryanair to decide on base closures. According to CAPA, the airline is considering closing three bases on the Canary Islands and one on mainland Spain. These proposed closures will affect Girona, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Tenerife.

737MAX delays hurt Spanish airports as Ryanair cuts back

Unions representing Ryanair cabin crew and pilots in Spain have protested the planned closure of four Ryanair bases at Tenerife-Sur, Gran Canaria Las Palmas and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, and Girona on the mainland (northeast of Barcelona).

The closures are expected to result in the loss of close to 520 jobs, including more than 120 pilots. Labour groups believe that the base closures are unjustified, with no reason given other than the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX.

In Jul-2019 Ryanair reduced its planned summer 2020 capacity growth from 7% to 3% because of expected delays to its MAX delivery schedule. Consequently, it said, it would need to close/cut its fleet at some bases for summer 2020 and winter 2019/2020. Its Canary Islands bases are understood to be heavily loss-making in the winter.

Nevertheless, Spain is an important revenue source for Ryanair and is a very popular holiday destination for its customers.

Overall growth in this market is slowing, even reversing this winter, after strong expansion in 2013 to 2017, partly reflecting some market consolidation. Ryanair is the leading Spain-Europe airline, although it has lost some market share. Spain, including the four airports where bases are set to close, will remain important to Ryanair.

Now that signs of a deal seem to be on the horizon, and legislation such as the Benn Act and the Letwin Amendment have reduced the risk of a hard Brexit, Lloyds could really be on the way up.

Since this optimism started two weeks ago, the share price is up over 10%. Judging from the fact that the share price has been hampered by Brexit over several years, there could be significant longer-term growth prospects.

Trading Update

Given the strengthening booking trend, the Board now believes that current market expectations for Group profit before foreign exchange revaluations and taxation for the year ending 31 March 2020 will be exceeded. The Board will provide a further update on publication of its interim results on 21 November 2019.
