I feel this is the turning point in India. The fact that CC has been invited says to me that they have an important role to play in securing a 99.9% almost guaranteed link up that is as near secure as you can get.
In my past life I was paid to think outside of the box, very quickly on occasions.
If I was EESL (India Government) I would ask CC to set up a 12km Matrix across the whole of India with infills in weaker spots. As Omni is multi-platformed whenever they have a notspot problem CC RF meter can be switched on preventing any delays in roll out. If CC is engaged at times as the lead contractor in some areas it can also use the facility.
May sound expensive but I don't think it would be, especially in bulk.
Am I getting carried away, may be, but it simplifies situation for EESL.
Got up too early.
You're not out there (Mumbai - 5.5 hours ahead) are you or did you just need a pee?
The roundtable discussion hosted by Intellismart JV appears to be an organised effort to bring coherence to the logisitical challenges of a 250m smart meter rollout. I imagine invites would have gone out to all the players in the industry, so I wouldn't read too much into the possible commercial significance at this stage.
However, I detect an important shift in business strategy and thinking for EESL, which as far as we know, has been an underperforming Indian government controlled entity. My take on the development of a JV vehicle is a tacit admission by the Govt that the current model and success of EESL has not delivered, but allowing the development of a JV vehicle gives them a politically acceptable, face saving solution. Once Intellismart picks up, EESL could be quietly wound down and disappear from public view.
This JV with NIIF with new branding as Intellismart could be the start of the development of an "arms length" commercial body, which may be able to operate and build business relatively free of government imposed constraints. It could become a profit centre in itself, whereas the old EESL may not have been given the political mandate to do so.
Also Intellismart brings the financial firepower of a National Infrastructure (NIIF) fund to quicken the pace, develop economies of scale and a more rapid rollout. I am sure that there will be "soft loans" and incentives available to partners/players to increase smart meter manufacture, software and hardware capacity etc.
If Intellismart can crack the Indian smart meter rollout and deliver even a smidgen of the projected savings, then it could potentially sell its project expertise to other parts of the developing world. PM Modi has talked about making India a $5 Trillion economy in the next several years (I think), so this may be a tiny part of a grand jigsaw.
A lot of speculation and horizon gazing on my part...but to be absolutely clear, we are a long way off any commercial benefit from the same, if at all. But good to know that we are at the forum today.
Good morning Imperiallondon and all.
I agree with a lot of what you are saying. Interesting times developing.
Good luck,
LTI.
Looking back over an old post of mine mid Nov I still feel that if CC plays an active part in India roll out then may be it can produce an RF link at 10km/12km throughout the whole of India if would provide a secure matrix covering weak area and link IoT. I do not know km size of India but I would think 10,000+ DCU's would cope, battery operated so placed anywhere convenient.
I do get carried away, a bit 'back to the future' and strictly my own thoughts.
Morning tonyj.
India is 3.287 million km².
Without attempting to properly estimate what it would take to fully cover that area, I think your 10,000 is way too low !
Thanks for that 2cv.. I will have to get my calculator out.
However if doable and I think that it is it would be good way of getting IoT etc all over country and probably secure.
2cv.. calculated that one DCU circle covers 452km2. Divide that into 3.287m km2.
That's probably the minimum numbers required so add 10%.
What's the range of a DCU?
Yes you are right Tony that's what I got when I got round to it. I guess the terrain would affect range somewhat, and there would have to be some overlap, but perhaps you weren't far out, so my apologies !
452 sq km - is an area a little over 21km x 21 km.
1 DCU cannot cover this vast area with the tech we have.
I think you can't really extrapolate DCUs directly with area coverage due to range issues due to terrain, built up density, nature of construction materials etc. In the past a Data Concentrator Unit (DCU) could serve as the gateway for about 40 smart meters. But this number of smart meters that can be served has increased, due to increased power of the NIC and/or DCU capability.
Now a Data Concentrator Unit can serve as a gateway for about 200 smart meters. So this reduces the cost of the Discom in terms of capital expenditure for the roll out.
Also there was an RNS last year (the one about district central heating) about the range of the RF mesh being significantly extended in the Nordics by a huge margin. This could have a practical application in certain parts of rural / remote areas of India.
Hello 2cv and all.. Did not expect this response. I was surprised when you came up with that amount km2 but looked it up and correct. Always amazing how much a Square increases sums.
Anyway I spoke to my son and he sat down to calculated and came up with 6,600 approx. so 10,000 enough.
Imperial the way he worked it was 12km X circumference which is a diameter of 24km.
Again the bottom line is that if Indian Government pays and installs it then it is theirs for Control purposes in a national security etc and it can be used commercially if requested. I know dreaming.
I wonder what this group attitude is towards DCUs?

B.B.. makes you wonder what they were doing all day if they only collected 6.500 gbp a month.
Think I got that right.
Probably vandalising DCUs?
Go with that B.B.. May be our readers will have a rebellion. I don't think many left though.
I think many people lost respect for this bb, and most posters on it, when the Weirdo picked up so much support for being a err Weirdo.
Funny you should say that Colour.. Not many people buy a share and then talk into the ground and then dig an even deeper hole for it. Sanity comes into question.
If you believe the deep hole ****e, you are far more deluded than I thought. If the truth hurts, and I have been correct so far, you should filter me. It makes life so much easier here, some proper Cranks with too much time lately. Which reminds me, Tilly, what is the business plan?
Colour I think you are on thin ice, what has brought your confidence back with such vigour.
To be bothered to hang around this BB I take it you still have a few bob of shares in this derelict stock.
To my mind times have changed in the last 6 months especially last 2 months, we are now in the EESL clan, whether we stay there who knows but to me things look pretty set for the next 2 years with as steady rise likely.
Not to be too narky I think you are pretty sick the way things have turned out with CC now in with the Indian Government.
Of course for any newbies on the block this is only my view, so do your homework, but I am happy at present.
I haven't been reading the Weird ones posts, and that will remain. He has nothing to say, but posts all day lol.
Which wierd one?
Sorry, yeah. The one that's lost more than they can afford, and is looking to blame everyone else. Imo off course. DYOR lol.
Hi Colourbounce,
For goodness sake, I was desperately hoping you had matured a little over the past week but it seems you’re back to your old ways. Contrary to what you say, the discussions on here have actually been much better of late since the ‘Weirdo’ took you down a peg or two. I note that new posters (including myself) and previous posters have now felt able to contribute without fear of name-calling and quite frankly bullying. Please don’t spoil it for the rest of us. If you insist on posting, please focus on the company because apparently this is what the bulletin board is for. I’m afraid your posts are often better suited to a prepubescent group chat on WhatsApp.
I’m pretty darn certain you’ll start directing some of your usual vitriol my way now but it doesn’t bother me. I think we’ve all just had enough.
TenStorey
Hey, why not add to the discussion here? First post, no content, all very strange lol.
