Isn't English a bastardised language, so rules just change as and when it suits? ;)
So , I think we agree ;))
Regrettably some of the worst `Grammatical offenders` are those who have the media , TV and radio as their professional platform .
Out of interest , I wonder if your are from Scotland ?
" I usually go to the pub for a beer off of an evening ".
Some people completely ignore the rules of the english language and make up whatever comes to mind. The use of 'so' at the beginning of a statement is so irrritating and totally unecessary.
Blathering for the sake of it.
Anyone thinking that the DVLA (or whatever it is now) electronic record is updated in real time once vehicle tax is renewed online may be in for a shock sprintman. I dusted off the old SL500 which had been on SORN over the winter and taxed it on May 1st and went out in it for the day. Out of interest I checked the government's "Is it taxed" website when I returned home - still showing as on SORN. Pathetic when we can see share trades showing within 10 minutes and that is an applied delay I believe.
sprintman glad to hear it, seems bureaucrats think that making everything in triplicate will somehow make us safer, or is it just that it guarantees them a job and pension. :-)
There is currently an issue with pricing data on londonstockexchange.com and BorsaItaliana.it, due to an issue with a third party market data vendor. This has resulted in a temporary suspension of market data being displayed on these websites. We are working with the vendor to resolve the issue. There is no impact to trading across on our markets in London or Italy.
Hi Brom Every so often you see a number of cars clamped around here for to excise tax. I think they have 28 days to pay. I've seen the clamps on for 3 weeks or so and I or two disappear on a lorry after that. So crushed expect. So many ways vehicles are detected these days surprised people chance it.
probably :-))
Brom, By "easy targets", do you mean, cashed up self funded retiree's? Before the rest of the board fires up, it's just a bit of morning banter, relax. Good morning all :)
AIM4 I am not worried by poor grammar on the gov. web site, however I am worried that despite being in the gov. portal I still had to provide NI number, passport number and numerous password and security numbers and words to do the right thing and tax my car, whilst thousands (millions) run untaxed and insured.
Thought un taxed and uninsured car would be crushed when found, does that actually happen?
Seems to me gov is only interested in easy targets.
V111 I was thinking more about one of our former indigestible fiends, but then there are any "number" of them :-))
Sure Big Dave is working very hard at the moment to achieve a result,
~~~" as for the US, why say cracker when you mean biscuit"~~~
Americans do not speak English , they speak American , their vocabulary is American , their spelling is American and their pronunciation is American . !
Sadly , imo , it is seems to be ever `more cool ` (!) for British citizens to adopt Americanisms and even more cool to imitate the American accent .
Surely there are limits to American globalisation ~~~ PLEASE , NO more American food ! :))
"My pet hate (not pendant, that's a locket, medallion, amulet) is people who pronounce H as 'haitch' instead of the correct 'aitch'.
UGH."
LoL ! You're not wrong tinlode ; so how do you feel about people who misuse the preposition of and off and especially those who feel the need to use both together ?
eg : " I usually go to the pub for a beer off of an evening ".
I 'taxed' a vehicle online recently at the official gov.uk site. I noticed a section explaining that if there was a difference between a renewal notice rate and the rate shown on the website "This is due to new vehicle tax rates taking affect" AFFECT!! I used the feedback to say I thought I was on a fake website trying to scam me...the first tell tale being poor grammar and spelling. And don't get me started on the Radio 2 traffic reporters... every incident is always "effecting" traffic in the area.
I believe aytch was the original spelling of aitch, but is now the official spelling according to dictionaries
However english develops over the years and is still a beautiful language if used properly Too much corruption too quickly and I grit my teeth.
Reading old english is like reading a foreign language as modern english probably will be in years to come, but let it flow beautifully for as long as possible.
Stu*f the american versions, our versions are smoother..
yep I remember "small terry" giving grammar and spelling lessons to all and sundry, I await the split infinitive police to arrive, as for the US, why say cracker when you mean biscuit (one for the long term posters :-) )
stai appy everi1
it's probably the Cockney's wot gave the Yanks the idea to drop the aitches, me ole china.
Hopefully this will end up 'wholly' good for all. Haha
probably should have said "Huh" as my mate is called Hugh.
h continued, so is this the Rule of Cockneys:
pronounce h's that are usually ignored
and
ignore h's that are usually pronounced
'ow is that, yaw 'onor )))
I blame the French they always drop the "hugh" sound of Aitch (H).
Then the yanks do us no favours with 'erbs for flavouring, and paying 'omage for the privilege.
To be honest I am not sure your honour!
tinlode, surely
'h' is pronounced as 'h'
meaning, as in the start of hat, harry, hi, hello etc.
There/Their/ They're you go again, LeMajor
Just a thought, maybe we could fish for squid instead. They don't release oil as such, but ink, we could set up a pen company. Could call it 88p (88pen) because we couldn't do 88e (just didn't have the energy) haha. All good Jiddy, no need to berate me, just having fun.
