This is in addition to the South African Variant which is equally as Nasty.
We had 235 cases of the SA variant two weeks ago, i don't know the current numbers but its another variant of concern.
Surge Testing using PCR being carried out in locations to identify cases
Seems like the USA is finally starting to take the sequencing of covid19 samples more seriously.

I don’t think it’s time to throw in the towel because of 6 cases of the Brazilian variant or to usher in the pointless and useless opposition to rescue us! Vaccination has been a fantastic success here and there is plenty of evidence they will offer protection against all variants even if it may be reduced in some cases. NVCT is so well positioned to fight the Covid war which is with us for the foreseeable. I also accept that LFTs have their role to play to even though I have no investments in any company in that space. Good luck all holders and let’s not all panic mr mannering!
New variants are here for the foreseeable too
Risehall I remember reading about how many folks reside in the UK and work and aren't supposed to be here , not surprised that some do not proffer up contact details. There has to be something put in place that catches the "naughty " ones. It was a very big number.
Karren, excellent post above, nice one
What I find most shocking is that they cannot trace one of those cases because the person who gave the sample did not fill out their contact details. What an absolute shambles.

But not a bb discussion. K :)

As you know I am 100 % behind NCYT but to say the current vaccinations are useless is not imo correct. I view them as a start , a dam good one.
The concern is the variants and the constant boosters that will be required. It has been a mammoth effort to get 20 million vaccinated , diverting doctors; the army , consultants etc to administer them , we cannot maintain this on an ongoing basis ,that is my concern. We saw today in the news people out in droves mingling , schools returning imminently and still the NHS is flat out coping with existing covid patients. We cannot remain in permanent lockdown ,we need to find a balance. That has to be a first class track and trace with accurate fast testing. I have no faith in any of the track and trace systems that I have read about thus far. Anyone who thinks testing will be reduced has not been following anything that has been happening for the last year. The big threat now is variants which impact the efficacy of the vaccines. To track these the govt needs to use the most accurate tests available to pick up every case of covid and then identify which strain it is. Testing will increase and as Sharon Pea**** said in Fridays Webinar, sequencing and vaccine efficacy go hand in hand. Test Test Test
If there are six cases found then I am in no doubt at all that multiples of that number exist and the whole risk of infecting those already vaccinated, particularly our vunerable rises to the fore.
I am generally a positive person but this situation has the potential to escalate quickly.
Turn now to the rest of the world , even our neighbours France where vaccine take up is an issue. We are looking at border closures for a very long time unless PCR testing is used. Vaccine passports only work if a vaccine is 100% effective and we know even from the govt surge testing doc that you have to take a PCR test even if vaccinated if a variant has been found in your area of residence. That is because the govt know the current vaccines do not have anywhere near 100 efficacy.
All very concerning and there has been enough unnecessary death thus far , the govt must be held accountable if they allow inferior tests to be used. Note my use of the word if. K

So someone returned from Brazil in mid-Feb with the new Brazil variant P1.
Mandatory hotel quarantine was introduced in the U.K. on Feb 15th.
What went wrong and how many more cases are out there because the Govt dithered so long before introducing the measure ? No doubt they'll attempt to re-write history again and say it wasn't their fault and stong robust measures had been in place all the time. Yet again, how many lives will be lost unnecessarily as a result of their sheer incompetence and lack of urgency ?
Maybe some ministers should be thrown in prison for 10 years.
I saw the AZN one is only 10% effective against the Brazil variant, so let's hope that doesnt take hold or all these current vaccinations are useless
Apparently the vaccin is less responsive to the Brazilian variant. The big pharmas have to return to the drawing board for new vaccins. Thanks to NCYT, we have at least a tool to detect the mutation types.

Public Health England (PHE) have identified the first UK cases of the Manaus variant of coronavirus, a new strain that may spread more rapidly and may respond less well to existing vaccines.
Up to six cases of the concerning variant first detected in the Brazilian city have been identified in Britain, three in England and three in Scotland, it emerged on Sunday.
The first two cases of the P.1 strain are from one household in South Gloucestershire with a history of travel to Brazil but the third is not linked.
The whereabouts of that individual is unknown, as PHE says the person did not complete their test registration card so follow-up details are unavailable.
Officials are asking anyone who took a test on February 12 or 13 and who has not received a result or has an uncompleted test registration card to come forward immediately.
Dr Susan Hopkins, PHE’s strategic response director for Covid-19, said: “We have identified these cases thanks to the UK’s advanced sequencing capabilities which means we are finding more variants and mutations than many other countries and are therefore able to take action quickly.
“The important thing to remember is that Covid-19, no matter what variant it is, spreads in the same way. That means the measures to stop it spreading do not change.”

The World Health Organisation has been informed of the cases, which has been designated “of concern” as it shares key mutations with the variant detected in South Africa.
More work is needed, but there are concerns that the existing vaccines may be less effective against the Manaus stran.
In South Gloucestershire, one of the individuals had travelled back from Brazil in mid-February, before the Government introduced the quarantine hotel policy.
So they isolated at home with the rest of their household. One member developed symptoms, officials said, before getting a test.
There were three other further cases in that household, two of which were confirmed as the Manaus variant with genetic sequencing, but the other two were not sequenced.
The remaining unlocated case is not believed to be linked to the others because the virus was found to have slight genetic differences.

Possibly a busy weekend for the NCYT genomics sequencing team?
