Even without a 'peace agreement', once the EU agrees the recycling of the frozen Russian assets, Putin's unprovoked invasion will probably come to a grinding halt within a matter of weeks. Putin will see that the game is up, and the costs only escalating for declining returns.

@FoggTheMogg - you can read in a recent Economist article 'In Washington, everything appears to be for sale' about Witkoff's deals, as an official negotiator, with certain Emiratis, that served hugely to benefit his son's crypto company and Trump family businesses. Not hard to see how similar games could be in play in Moscow.

And if anyone is wondering what hold Putin has over Trump, just read the excellent 'The Mission; the CIA in the 21st century' by Tim Weiner, which summarises very clearly what was known about possibly decisive GRU interference in the 2016 election which first brought Dumpf to power (to say nothing of what might have happened when he was in Moscow in 2013 for the Miss Universe show...)

This is probably why Rubio, also more of a hawk against Putin, is being kept at arm's distance.

@LemonTree - yes, the reparations payable to Ukraine by Russia will be enormous. Hopefully the EU will now mobilise the frozen klepto funds and buy a LOT of Tomahawks to hit Russia with.

Which sounds a lot like he's realised he has little choice. There are of course elements of the proposal that are disgusting and shouldn't and won't be accepted by Ukraine. But maybe those elements can be negotiated back a little. Membership of the EU is a huge inducement. Details of "security guarantees" are key.

Should be a fairly safe haven in the coming rout...

"US security guarantees" reportedly now in the mix, which would be new. But who in their right mind would trust a country/president that is beholden to the enemy and a proven egregious liar to provide security...??
