Mattyboy I understand and endorse much of your 'rant', and fully appreciate the pain behind it. However my point is
(1). You have inherited a property worth over £600k, which you did not earn. You pay £150k + some interest leaving you with around £450k thanks to your thrifty parents. You are in a very priveleged position not accorded to the majority.
However
(2). If you are still !iving in your father's property, it is rather remiss that legal provision was not taken, (mind you I loathe the legal profession / shisters having lost everything and 15 years of my life through their initial negligence and then self protection). Therefore once your IHT is paid you will still remain in a a very fortunate position with around £450k to invest.
(3). We brought up 4 children but as we were 6 days a week self-employed were never in a position to take a holiday until, thanks to lawyers, we had a 15 year holiday.
As regards the super rich, the workshy, and abusers of our generous welfare system, I fully agree with you. It is very frustrating to watch the abuse, including legal aid, and it is no wonder these would be brits try to row the channel in order to join the benefits queue, totally against EU rules regarding application for asylum.
My main point is that you, and others in a similar position, are very fortunate to be presented with a large sum of money you did not earn. As a war baby, adopted, I never knew my father, and was 30 before I met my mother. But that's life, some have it easy some don't, as it happens, excepting those damn lawyers, I've enjoyed a fortunate life. We all want to leave something for our children to remember us by, but look áround the world, you will see that even if you were made to surrender all your inheritance you would probably be in the top 10% of the human race.
Render unto Caesar that which is,.............. Then count your blessings. IMO.
