An accounting mantra of long ago was that to assume a profit was a complete no no. A profit was only a profit when actually realised and booked.

Most of us (all I hope!!) have a share or two on their books showing a "profit!" Well it ain't until you press that "Sell" button 'cos it can disappear in the twinkling of an eye.

All these "Accounting Rules" introduced by the Accounting profession over the years seem to me to be a vehicle whereby companies can hide the true picture of their state of play by reams of obfuscation designed to give the average punter a migraine.

We might but only if we extract our digit sharpish before somebody trumps us!!

Many on this Board have ridden with this share for well over a decade and I would be interested to hear what folk have in mind as a strategy for cashing in, if that is their intention of course. At what price would the consider enough is enough and to hell with what might happen in the future including the potential for further substantial gains.? £2.00/£3.00?Will some be happy to just break even with a sigh of relief? Will some get their stake back and leave the rest to ride?

All predicated on a substantial rise in the SP of course!!!

Is that not the case with most elections- a section of the population that doesn't vote has a powerful impact on the result?

As for Cameron he bowed to public pressure, a public that was fed up to the back teeth with being ruled by a financially corrupt organisation and having our 1,000 year old legal system subjugated to the European Court. Over 100,000 pieces of new EU legislation were dumped on our statute books during our Membership: the memory of the sheer stupidity of a lot of them still lingers.

Don't you remember the last time the UK Labour Party was in government in 2010, when Liam Byrne, the chief secretary to the Treasury under Gordon Brown, left a note for his successor, which simply said: ‘Dear chief secretary, I’m afraid to tell you there’s no money left.’

Maybe the other lot did leave a tax burden but surely that is no reason for making it worse by taking yet more out of our pockets. As for corruption and waste, name me a government which has not been guilty on both counts and as for Brexit it was the will of the people, not a government decision.

Too right-I have yet to see any mention by the Pinkos of waging a war on government waste which, as we all know, is at obscene levels (witness the ever spiralling costs of the white elephant HS2) and on the plethora of Quangos which produce nothing but provide various hangers on with nice little lucrative sinecures.

Time to return to to matters L&G after what has been a lively debate so may I add my final comment.

Sometime in the last few days, and I couldn't find it, someone advanced the theory that it is up to everybody to make their own pension arrangements instead of relying on the State or similar.

The latest announcement from our beloved Government

"HMRC has confirmed that inheritance tax of up to 40 per cent will apply to private pensions from April 2027, regardless of whether the saver dies before the current withdrawal age of 55".

So much for paddling your own canoe

Accordingly, those readers who have condemned the Triple Lock might want to look at the above announcement along the lines of :-

" civil servants looking forward to solid gold taxpayer funded, index-linked pensions have decided to steal the pension funds of those who have paid into not only their own pension scheme but into the bloated public sector pension scheme as well"

and then tell us all that the Triple Lock is unfair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The yawning gap between Public Sector pensions and those in the private sector is a national scandal but nobody says a dick bird.

Oh! I am painfully aware of the failings in the system of handing out largesse to pensioners without means testing, but to take your example of the couple on £70k between them, as I pointed out the other day it will all be subject to income tax but in the meantime will have been spent on the High Street/ restaurants/fuel for the car so a big chunk will also go on VAT leaving very little to have a riotous time.
