BoD possibly decided that Abramovich receiving $450m in dividend would shine a spot light on the company, and could get a media campaign going to have it sanctioned. I would say they have done us a favour.

All depends on these peace talks. If they fail, I could see the potential of expanded sanctions causing another big drop. However I think peace will break out eventually, but it might take a couple of weeks.

Analyst forecast for the share price prior to all this was £6.50. That was before the earninggs update which was 30% higher than market expectations. Assuming there would have been some benefit to the share price of those, you might have expected a revised target of £7+. On top of that, with the cheap rouble to pay the workers reducing payroll costs, and steel prices up 20%, it is possible Evraz is currently making bumper profits. This could equal aother nice dividend.

If all goes perfectly, current holders could be looking at a 10x return. However, things are never that easy in reality!!! The share price will probably do some scary ups and downs for a while, but if things get better in Ukraine, there will be a big jump. Another jump if the threat of more sanctions is removed. Another jump if Evraz returns to the FTSE and another jump when institutional shareholders have forgotten all about the Ukraine war.

There are a lot of questions about dividends. For each year, the directors may declare a dividend if there are sufficient profits. Once this is voted upon, the money transfers from the company into the ownership shareholder and cannot be taken away. Because shareholders dont want to wait a whole year to get cash, the directors can make "instalment payments" in the form of interim dividends. If it subsequently turns out that they made an interim dividend payment that was unlawful (because distributable reserves turn out to be insufficient after they've done the year end accounts), the dividend must be repaid by the shareholders. A bit of a faff for a company like Evraz with thousands of shareholders, so they are unlikely to make an interim payment that wasnt 100% certain.

Isnt that that just MMs triggering stop losses ? They done quite a few while they accumulate!

Evraz is not a Russian company. It is not based in Russia, it is not owned by Russians. There is a well known Russian shareholder, but you can't punish Mr and Mrs Smith who have their pension invested in Evraz (and other FTSE 100 companies) for that . And they wont. In the US Evraz employs thousands of Ordinary Joes and Jesicas in their Steelworks. Noone is going to be the one to throw them on to the streets.

The majority ownership is UK pensioners via their pension funds. It's really hard to pin this Russian thing on them. They do make steel and have mines in Russia but so do lots of international companies.

Evraz have a large steel making business in the US. O haven't checked but I'm sure they employ thousands of Americans. Why would they want to put all those people out of work. This is not a Russian company.

I agree Putin seems to be changing his tune. Earlier on today he said:

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Friday for the “normalization” of relations with other states, saying Moscow has “absolutely no ill intentions with regard to our neighbors.”

Speaking via video link at a ceremony raising the Russian flag on a Kaliningrad ferry, Putin called for global coordination, even as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its second week.

“I think that everyone should think about normalizing relations and cooperating normally,” he said.

He said Russia saw no need to aggravate tensions with other countries, claiming that Moscow’s actions in Ukraine came only “in response to unfriendly actions toward Russia.”

“There is no need to escalate the situation, impose restrictions. We fulfill all obligations,” he said. “If someone does not want to cooperate with us within the framework of single cooperation, and by doing so harms themselves, they will, of course, harm us, too.”

Quiite a contrast from the threats of the BIG RED BUTTON earlier in the week.

That would mean for instance that he would not be able to sell his shares in Evraz. It does not affect the company functioning.

It is a UK multinational company with some Russian assets. Russia accounts for a third of its revenue. Many UK companies have assets in Russia.

I really cannot see why you would lose the lot, even without a dividend. This is a listed UK company with assets all around the world + cash. Unless their customers refuse to buy from them it is business as usual. If Putin nicks the Russian assets at some point, they still have a substantial business in RoW. I think the dividend might be postponed which will dent the share price (or it already did going from 90p to 60p? But if you hang on to this you are unlikely to come out with a loss.

It seems there are quite a few soldiers uneasy about bombing the Ukranians. Ukraine and Russia have a lot of historical and family ties. It would be similar if we invaded Ireland (yes yes I know we did in the past, but that was a very long time ago). How many UK soldiers would be comfortable to take their tanks into Dublin and fire at buildings/ people? I think there is a chance the soldiers will be reluctant, and might just say no. Eventually.

This is NOT a Russian company. It is a UK comany with SOME Russian assets.

haggis Evraz is a UK headquartered plc which until yesterday was FTSE 100 and therefore has many UK pensioners invested in it. It has operations all over the world. The UK government is out to sabotage the UK economy and one of its significant producers. That is not the point of the sanctions at all. , Nor is the LSE out to shoot themselves in the foot by killing off a major constituent. There is zero chance of Evraz being delisted.

nuri you say that given what we know now investors deserve to lose their money. Well what I know is that Evraz is a UK plc, with many UK pensioners invested in it. Furthermore the bumper revenue the company had last year means the world - the West included - needs what it produces. The UK government is trying to squeeze Putin, not deliberately cause a deep recession, especially not so soon after Covid. As much as everyone is behind Ukraine, the UK (and world) population is tired of hardship and there is no reason to deliberately sabotage the economy over this. Ukraine is a friend, it's not a brother. Sanctions will be limited to individuals and the Russian finance sector, with the aim to put indirect pressure on Putin. While Abramovic is a major shareholder in Evraz, most of the shareholders are ordinary Joes. I doubt very much the UK government (or the LSE) wants to sabotage a FTSE 100 UK headquartered company into failure. If Putin retaliates by seizing assets, Evraz is still a whole lot more than its Russian assets. More than 50p in any case. The market has gone into a bit of a frenzy, but some of that is emotional.

The someone stepping in will be China. They can wag their fingers at both sides; to the West - you've been making Russia feel nervous with discussions to bring Ukraine into Nato; to Putin - yeah it is completely understandable you got nervous, but civilians are getting caught up in this, time to back off and negotiate. We may be poised for a ceasefire. Putin will want to strengthen his hqand first, eg by surrounding Kiev. So a few more days to go at least...
