One of the smart meters government reports out today and the media have latched onto it....£11 average savings per year ......Iif so, I will resist a smart meter ( as il be paying for it ) and continue to just take out every third lightbulb in my house...works a treat ..if the kids complain I tell them to find a cheap flat in sw19 ...minimum cost of £1500 pm plus provide your own bulbs and pay the electricity bill .lol...

It looks like they have a similar problem with HAN as well. "Interested vendors can still submit an expression of interest to AltHANProcurement@gemserv.com. This is part of the programme to install SMART electricity and gas meters to all residential and small business customers in GB by the end of 2020. The new Alt HAN technology is needed to address 3.5% of buildings where the currently planned smart metering solutions are likely to be difficult to deploy due to device to device communication restriction"

Another new name. I wonder if Alt Han was set up by energy suppliers to support the smets transfer

Hi Tony. I read the Hansard report you mentioned earlier. It get interesting about half way down when Representatives from both secure and trilliant get involved in Q&As .....the over the air firmware upgrade of smelts 1 is a world first apparently and has never been done in such large numbers before ...although secure say they have tested it in Australia . It looks like the solution for the smets1 upgrades fall on the meter manufacturers ( 6 main manufacturers supplying uk) with trill isn't and secure the biggest....the big ones have been working on the upgrade issue themselves but what about the smaller company's ....where will they get the solution from?

Tony. DEC must be working on a software / firmware update that can turn smet 1 into smet 2 remotely.....im no techy ( as you can see) but doesn't there already need to be something inside a smet 1 to enable it to be upgraded - otherwise its a knock on the door scenario.

There are only two ways to update a piece of kit a ) manually or remotely via a connection. Smet 1 is cellular so maybe that's the way into the kit.

What I do not understand is that even 5 years ago DECC were looking at ways to upgrade smet 1 to smet 2 once the first smet1 were rolled out as they had already identified the problems of smet 1 not being linked to DCC and owners not being able to change suppliers as original sim card in smet 1 meters...therefore the solution to this transition and what to do with the millions of smet 1 meters has been known for some time.... Telefonica would have know this would be an issue even before smet 1 were rolled out and would have needed a solution ( not only for not spots) but also how to solve the useless smet 1 problem without having to arrange an engineer to visit a property and change the meter over to the new one.

If CC was good enough as a back stop for a) not spots b) pick up when the grid drops then its also possible ( just possible) that they incorporated CC in all suppliers smet 1 meters.....this is just me trying to make sense of it all.

From what I read the solution will be in the firmware ( what ever that is).
Big question was why did they even bother with smet 1 and instead wait for smet 2 before rolling out...

Have a read from page 15 onwards and see if it makes any sense to you. It seems DECC have been planning this move from SMET1 to sm 2 since 2013. Therefore the SMET 1 meters already in situ should already be prepared for the future transition from smet1 to 2 ....they make it quite clear they wish to avoid a visit to a premise.

I can't believe that today's rns caused todays buying as its similar to the Brussels rns last year......someone's buying or increasing their stake.....or even better we have a leak.....

According to Tata Communication the Smart Gas Meter market in India will hit an amazing number of smart meters in the next three years. Another market that CC could explore.....i seem to recall that CC often mention gas meters as one of their solutions in their PR blurb ...and sometimes mentioned in research notes as a Gas solution provider ....surely CC and Tata have explored the gas meter market in Mumbai.

The big question is who's involved in Tata Communications IOT platform which looks like it's expanding at a fantastic rate with a mouthwatering reach.

Morning All. Chianti. What stood out in my mind after reading the cost comparisons link. The forecast for this year for dual band ( cellular and mesh) does not seem like a lot of units around 16,000 according to the links you kindly posted yesterday. " Also in the charging statement (page 19) for the year it estimates that 11,227,566 SBCHs and 16,500 DBCHs are to be connected. Am I missing something ? Cheers

Afternoon all. I keep reading about how the Smet 1 meter can be upgraded to a smet 2 meter by downloading software if it goes dumb.......but Smet1 meters are not connected to DCC? . Here's just one article.
"If you do get a SMETS 1, switch and your smart meter becomes 'dumb', the plan is that in due course SMETS 1 meters can be remotely upgraded with software to allow them to meet SMETS 2 specifications. If that doesn't happen or the upgrade doesn't work for you though, there's a chance you'll have to arrange for an engineer to come and install a SMETS 2 meter to replace your SMETS 1 - annoying and inconvenient, but not the end of the world."
