As an aside..I am wondering if the EESL pre paid tender meters are going directly to the rural electrification of new hook ups in rural areas ...I have read that UP is one of the largest single areas that need to be covered.

I mentioned ERDA . It seems they were empanelled by EESL for manufacture / test of 16444 meters in 2016

Tony. I'm far from a expert and I'm trying to make some sense of it all.
All I can see is all meters should be IS16444 compliant in the EESl orders but there are not enough company's or organisations / manufacturers that are awarded this certificate.

So I'm not sure who's supplying such vast amounts of These meters .....a pre paid meter could be just that when they roll it out ....and possibly upgraded at a later date. I don't really know ...getting more confused.

Tony. It's the same concept as your mobile contract or cable TV. ..but the difference is that in the indian case ...you pay in advance...if your meter shows no deposit...then no electricity. If you tamper with the meter it gets disconnected. From what I've read I've seen 90% of all meters will be pre-paid ...interesting also a investors meeting Q&A session with HPL feb 18...they are bullish for future but did say that at present 1/3 of pre booked future orders are presently pre paid meters and the other 2/3 of orders were for basic static meters....which are still being bought by utilitys.

Any news on successful SI for any of the EESL tenders? This article mentions that the meters " can" be connected......doesn't sound like they will anytime soon, but maybe that's just the authors interpretation.

Does beg the question whether EESL could roll out millions of potential smart meters prior to hooking them up and turning on the magic...not sure what the advantage of that would be though.

Did notice the debate about the Smet 2 2020 deadline is vague....will everyone need to be supplied with a smet 2 meter or just given the option ?

"The Smart Energy Meter technology is developed by CDAC, Thiruvananthapuram under National Mission on Power Electronics Technology ( NaMPET ) program funded by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MeitY). The project successfully completed in December 2016. This is the first Smart metering technology developed as per Indian Standards IS16444-2015, IS15959 (1), IS15959 (2)-2016 for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The main features of this Smart Meter are Bi-directional energy flow measurement, Bi-directional communication, Remote load control, Tamper & event logging and integrated communication module configurable for GPRS / WiFi, IrDA and Bluetooth. The communication of meter is based on DLMS / COSEM protocol with high level security and encryption. This technology can also be used for measurement of different mediums like gas (LPG), water and Low Voltage DC .

Just a thought with ITI being a goverment of India undertaking and nesring in mind it has not turned in a profit for past two decades approx. ( until this year strangely ) ....would they be able to bid at a loss or just cost neutral...they are selling there meters cheaper than anyone else.
