RE: On line tax7 Feb 2021 08:30
The government is considering these taxes at the moment. Nothing set in stone. It isn't likely to be announced in the March budget. This idea has been in the press many times before and the Ocado share price has moved very little in response.
2 taxes are proposed. The first - a tax on excessive profits earnt during the pandemic - shouldn't be a big deal for Ocado since they have reported and will continue to report very small profits for the next year. They continue to invest heavily in their new technology. Further on, 3 years or more are when big profits should start to be declared.
The second tax, on online sales going forward, will increase Ocado retails costs per delivery but this will be passed directly to the consumer. All other online grocery competitors will be taxed per delivery in the same way. The online grocery market in the UK has expanded hugely. A small tax is unlikely to have a big effect on the industry. If I have to pay £1 tax per grocery delivery I receive from Ocado, will this push me to go back and shop in store? No.
