TicoR :...In the main the sailing fraternity are pretty responsible imo , by that I mean yachting . If in your post you are referring to the Cruising and some Shipping Companies , that`s a whole different and disgusting issue !
Some 20 million people board cruise ships every year. And while they might return to land with fond memories of umbrella drinks and shuffleboard, they leave a lot at sea. About a billion gallons (3.8 billion liters) of sewage (pdf), in fact. A huge proportion of this Cruise line phenomena is centered on the Caribbean , and current legislation allows for the discharge of human waste 10 miles from shore .
This black water is disgusting it`s teeming with bacteria, heavy metals, pathogens, viruses, pharmaceuticals, and other things (including rubber !) that can harm the health of both humans and aquatic life.
The EPA estimates that single 3,000-person cruise ship pumps 150,000 gallons of sewage—about 10 backyard swimming pools’ worth—into the ocean per week. One vessel in an EPA study produced 74,000 gallons of sewage in a single day . Very nasty !
~~~~~~~~ As you rightly say , an oil spillage , and all hell breaks loose until the Company responsible cleans it up , which they are required to do .
People should have to pay a bit more for their fun on the high seas so tanks can be cleaned and treated when the ship returns to port .
