RE: Mologic and Bill gates - FT article19 Jul 2021 13:05
DM83,
I, and I assume many others got into ODX as a covid play. They do appear to have a great product in food detective, and also the CD4 tests, but I'd never heard of them and it's not why I'm here.
The short answer is that it is all about orders. ODX historically have not had any. And they have been promising them since Oct last year, using not dissimilar rhetoric to what we hear today. Oct 2020 presentation said that antibody testing would occur as part of the vaccine roll, now its suggested it'll happen shortly (the word imminent was used ?), possibly as part of a booster campaign.
Antigen sales were expected by many in Feb, and then the company said an unconditional 2M per week delivery of LFTs in April, which was obvious for a long time that that didn't happen, and they confirmed it in the presentation.
They also spent many months (more than was expected) TTing a test which is now known to have repeatedly failed Porton Down testing, a mandatory requirement for it to be used by uk Gov. How that impacts the saleability of their generic visitect variant was not mentioned, but it clearly has an impact. It is not surprisingly therefore that they are trying to differientiate it. Also CE approval was targeted for end of this month, but now it appears this is pushed out further.
So for me the company has a credibility issue, they have spent time making tests that no one wants (vistiect tri-antibody test, the elisa test), and have misread the market and have repeatedly seriously misjudged timings. They have also left their fortunes in the hands of others. The government regarding antibody / antigen contracts, Abingdon as lead of the RTC is soley responsible for getting those sales, and it is Mologic that has been submitting and dealing with Porton Down for the antigen testing and indeed dealing with the FDA for EUA.
Nothing short of firm orders will resolve that. If they can get to announce a good firm definite order, and indeed announce production, then the SP will quickly respond, and if they can show good visibility to fully utilise the capacity then we'll all be in a far better place.
However, ODX seems to have stalled into the "potential" category for far far too long, at that is still where we find ourselves 15 months into the pandemic.
