The recent meteoric rise in the nickel price may have stalled of late but the drop in the amount of nickel in the LME shows no sign, so far, of slowing down. Inventory dropped by 846 tonnes yesterday and 1,460 tonnes today. Total Class 1 nickel now 177,078 tonnes (live warrants - 115,596 tonnes, cancelled warrants - 61,482 tonnes).

Not so sure about that. This US proposal is essentially a regressive tax. It favours the wealthy and does nothing for the poor so I suspect it would be right up his street.

The owners of these snouts really do know how to rub it in. At least them buying now more or less guarantees that the share price will not fall any further. We might even see I little bounce if we’re lucky.

In nickel’s case it’s a result of demand exceeding supply not a combination of COVID-19 and BREXIT.

I think the point I was trying to make with that original post is just how fickle nickel can be. From $5/lb. to $9/lb in the space of less than 18 months with the potential for the current up trend to reverse at any moment is what makes committing large amounts of capital to develop a project difficult. It's a bit like the share price shooting all the way up to 44p and PIs complaining that the company should have done a placing at that level. As if......

There are plenty of examples out there to look at that should give peeps some idea of just how difficult timing can be. Santa Rita was Robin Young's darling project to reference since it resembled KM in many ways. That is until it went bust when the nickel price cratered. And we all know the BHP/Nickel West story, trying to offload it one minutes a couple of years ago for a song with no takers to investing in its expansion now with nickel being one of its core commodities going into the future along with iron ore and potash.

Timing is everything in this game. If you get it right and manage to sell/JV/develop at some point in the future then the share price leading up to that point is largely immaterial.

From 30/06/2021 to 30/07/2021 stock in the LME fell by 17,844 tonnes.
From 30/07/2021 to 31/08/2021 stock in the LME fell by 20,166 tonnes.
From 31/08/2021 to 09/09/2021, only 7 trading days, stock in the LME has fallen by 13,098 tonnes.

If stocks fall over the remainder of this month at a similar rate the total for the whole month could be over 40,000 tonnes. That would leave about 155k tonnes of class 1 nickel in the LME.

Nickel is not known as "fickle nickel" for nothing so there are no guarantees that this is how it will play out. It does raise the prospect, however, of the LME cupboard being bare 1st.Q 2022.
