Jdt1990, can only conclude that its down to "Vested Interest".
The Avacta RNS is extraordinary in that Avacta has had to get climical evaluation of their LFT carried out in a European hospital.
It seems a colossal failure of the UK evaluation effort that such a promising test has not been evaluated in the UK. What on earth is going on? It reminds me of what looked like PHE's ignoral of Primerdesign, in the early stages of the pandemic. Is there a problem that a superb Avacta LFT does not suit Prof Sir John Bell's Oxford-centric view of the world? Or, are there other people who will be embarrassed by a successful Avacta test, when so much money has been wasted on the Innova test? This may sound like venturing into conspiracy theory territory, but one really does have to ask what is repeatedly, initially at least, skewing UK policy away from what look like clear choices? With Primerdesign, it was only when the rest of the world was beating a path to their door that the contracts were belatedly placed.
It is looking as if Avacta is not so much having its hands tied with NDAs as getting ignored by the UK authorities!
Will be interesting to see how this plays out from here!!

4000 variants!
Primerdesign were developing specific tests for some of the variants.
Imagine if Carl's optical test can indicate all these variants in one test, in 300 seconds, with excellent sensitivity and specificity!!!

Wondering if Carl's optical test or LFT can be made specific enough to identify new dangerous SARS-CoV-2 variants in travellers at points of entry to a country?
If the test time is reasonable this could be a major application.
I suppose the objection could be raised that surely you only need to know if someone has any variant and just isolate everyone with Covid-19. However, if people are infected with a more dangerous variant, then maybe they should be put into extremely strict isolation and given early treatment. So, I am still thinking that rapid testing for new variants at points of entry is worthwhile.
A further possible advantage of this testing could be that it might not be restricted to identifying single variant - is the spectrograph sufficiently different between different variants to allow identification of the different variants?
Perhaps that is asking too much of the LFT test. However, could the optical test be rapidly fine tuned to be specific to a new variant?
If it could then this could be THE test.
Haha any thoughts??

Community transmission of the South African variant, in the UK, was mentioned on the 14:00 Classic FM news (1/2/21).
